Who controls the food supply... - Health Supreme NewsGrabs 4 September 2011

New Zealand: Food, illegal? Not in my back yard.

Warrantless searches of houses and marae for food and seeds, even with guns, are coming to NZ soon thanks to the Food Bill – unless you do something.

- The bill would undermine the efforts of many people to become more self-sufficient within their local communities.

- Seed banks and seed-sharing networks could be shut down if they could not obtain authorisation. Loss of seed variety would make it more difficult to grow one’s own food.

- Home-grown food and some or all seed could not be bartered on a scale or frequency necessary to feed people in communities where commercially available food has become unaffordable or unavailable (for example due to economic collapse).

- Restrictions on the trade of food and seed would quickly lead to the permanent loss of heirloom strains, as well as a general lowering of plant diversity in agriculture.

- Organic producers of heirloom foods could lose market share to big-money agribusiness outfits, leading to an increase in the consumption of nutrient-poor and GE foods.

There is a Petition to oppose the bill.

The Truth Is Out on Genetically Modified Foods - And It's Not Pretty

The American Academy of Environmental Medicine’s position paper stated, “Several animal studies indicate serious health risks associated with GM food,” including infertility, immune problems, accelerated aging, insulin regulation, and changes in major organs and the gastrointestinal system. They conclude, “There is more than a casual association between GM foods and adverse health effects. There is causation,” as defined by recognized scientific criteria. “The strength of association and consistency between GM foods and disease is confirmed in several animal studies.”

Monsanto's Roundup May End Bananas—And They're Merely the Canary in the Mine

The bananas we eat today are not the same ones that were eaten in the first half of the 20th century. Those were tastier and creamier. They were lost to monoculture. A fungal infection, Fusarium, couldn't be overcome because nearly all bananas were clones, and therefore susceptible to the same disease.

The bananas we eat today, a different variety that had been secure from Fusarium are now falling to the same fungal infection. Agribusiness responds simply by closing up shop where the disease has taken over and starting up in a new area. In true earth scorching approach, they walk away from their disasters and do exactly the same thing elsewhere...

Adequate amount of vitamin D is critical for good health

"Higher vitamin D intake has been associated with lower risks of colorectal, prostate and breast cancer," said J. Lynne Brown, professor of food science. "Higher vitamin D intake also has been associated with a reduced risk of cardiovascular disease, a lower risk of type 1 diabetes and lower risk of autoimmune diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis and Crohn's disease."

Omega-3 fatty acids reduce stroke severity

A diet rich in omega-3s, found in fatty fish like salmon, reduces the severity of brain damage after a stroke, researchers in Canada say.

Jasna Kriz and Frederic Calon of the Universite Laval showed the extent of brain damage following a stroke was reduced by 25 percent in mice that consumed DHA type omega-3s daily.

Vitamin C beneficial for asthmatic children

Drs Al-Biltagi and Hemila conclude that there is strong evidence that the effect of vitamin C on asthmatic children is heterogeneous. They consider that it is important to carry out further research to confirm their findings and to more accurately identify the groups of children who would receive the greatest benefit from vitamin C supplementation.

Illegal Drug Advertising: Google to pay $500 Million Fine

Google will pay $500 million to settle a US federal investigation into the ads it accepted for online Canadian pharmacies, in a landmark case that may signal the beginning of Google's woes concerning its advertising practices.

According to investigators, some Canadian pharmacies accept an "online consultation" to dispense drugs, rather than requiring a prescription. This resulted in drugs like the painkiller Oxycontin and the stimulant Ritalin, both of which are considered as controlled substances in the U.S., being sold illegally.

Google has been working toward taking illegal drug advertising off its site for years and in February 2010 said it would no longer accept advertising from Canadian pharmaceutical sites. However, that decision came too late for the company to avoid Wednesday's multi-million settlement...

Don't drug my child, or I'll shoot

Maryanne refused to give her daughter a dangerous antipsychotic drug. She felt this was the only way she could protect her child from being forcefully medicated with Risperdal, a neuroleptic antipsychotic medication with a list of serious side effects, such as abdominal pain, vomiting, aggression, anxiety, dizziness and lack of coordination. We can easily see why Maryanne didn’t want to give this gem to 13-year-old Ariana!

Unethical medical experiments: Presidential Panel Condemns US Syphilis Study in Guatemala

A year after professor Susan M. Reverby, a historian at Wellesley College in Massachusetts, uncovered a heinous Guatemalan syphilis experiment conducted between 1946 and 1948, on at least 5,500 under the auspices of the US Public Health Service, a hearing was held this week about the findings of the President's Bioethics Commission investigation.

The Commission confirms that despite knowledge that it was unethical, US government medical scientists PURPOSELY infected "at least 1,300 who were exposed to the sexually transmitted diseases syphilis, gonorrhea and chancroid" to study the effects of penicillin. At least 83 subjects died."

"They infected soldiers, prostitutes, prisoners and mental patients. More than 5,500 people in all were part of the medical experimentation. And the presidential panel said government scientists knew they were violating ethical rules."
