Europe: Animals on GM Feed

GMfedCow.jpg

In Europe there is a huge demand for cheap animal feed. It is estimated that 85% of the EU’s compound feed production now contains GM or GM-derived material. Animal feeds based on GM soya and maize are increasingly being perceived as the cheapest and most readily available. Most non-organic animal products are therefore fed a large proportion of GM feed.

Through not enforcing the labeling of animal products as animals fed on GM, the EU is denying the public its right to make an informed decision.

Although this article talks specifically about GM feed in Europe, the situation in America and in many other places is likely to be even worse. Animal feed is a convenient backdoor for GM to be introduced into our food supply, as there is no labeling and of course no evaluation of impact on animal health, much less human health... and now, new approvals for GM maize are in the offing.

SmartStax Maize - Transgenes with Problems
As insane as it may appear, EPA regards the health effects of transgenes stacked together and their impact on the environment as equivalent to a mixture of chemicals pesticides sprayed on a plant. They presume that there is no need for environmental assessment or toxicological evaluation of the mixed genes and their products within the crop plant, where many unintended effects in gene expression and metabolic profile can occur.

India: Cultivation of genetically modified eggplant halted
In a dramatic move, India's Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh halted the commercial cultivation of ‘Bt brinjal’, the world's first genetically modified eggplant with insecticidal toxin protein from the soil bacterium Bt (Bacillus thuringiensis). Bt brinjal is intended to target the shoot and fruit borer insect pest of the crop.

The Minister made his announcement on 9 February 2010 after a series of public hearings in seven states and a consultation process with scientists, agricultural experts, farmers’ organizations, consumer groups, and non-governmental organizations. He said: “It is my duty to adopt a cautious, precautionary, principle-based approach... till such time as independent scientific studies establish to the satisfaction of both the public and professionals the safety of the product."

Cows on Drugs
In 2005, one class of antibiotics, fluoroquinolones, was banned in the production of poultry in the United States. But the total number of antibiotics used in agriculture is continuing to grow. According to the Union of Concerned Scientists, 70 percent of this use is in animals that are healthy but are vulnerable to transmissible diseases because they live in crowded and unsanitary conditions.

Anti-Cancer Agent Stops Metastasis
Mice implanted with cancer cells and treated with the small molecule macroketone lived a full life without any cancer spread, compared with control animals, which all died of metastasis. When macroketone was given a week after cancer cells were introduced, it still blocked greater than 80 percent of cancer metastasis in mice.

Vitamin and calcium supplements may reduce breast cancer risk
Vitamins and calcium supplements appear to reduce the risk of breast cancer, according to findings presented at the American Association for Cancer Research 101st Annual Meeting 2010.

"It is not an immediate effect. You don't take a vitamin today and your breast cancer risk is reduced tomorrow," said Jaime Matta, Ph.D., professor in the Ponce School of Medicine in Puerto Rico. "However, we did see a long-term effect in terms of breast cancer reduction."

Proper Use Of Vitamin C For Glaucoma & Vision
Given my penchant for self sufficiency the use of topic vitamin C was just too irresistible - hence I came up with my own concoction that I and my wife have been using 3+ times a day as a preventative given that the lens loses about 1 percent of its transparency each year. The effects so far have been most gratifying. There is an immediate clarity in sight after use and the eyes feel wonderful. The experiment is still on and we will be doing some ongoing refinements in due course. But for now this works great and is a keeper....

USA: Pilots Taking Antidepressants? The FAA Is Risking Our Lives
Ignoring the scientific data on adverse drug effects that the agency and I generated and evaluated for the earlier case, the FAA is lifting its 70-year-old ban on allowing pilots to take antidepressants. Has the science changed--improving the adverse reaction profile of these drugs? To the contrary, since that time my most dire observations have been confirmed in the FDA-approved label for all antidepressants. Now there is not only a Black Box Warning for suicidality in children, youth and young adults, but also a lengthy Warnings section about a variety of extremely dangerous abnormal behavioral reactions in all ages including aggression, hostility, disinhibition, impulsivity and mania. Even when not severe, these reactions impair judgment and increase the likelihood of accidents and violence.

Drug prices jump 9.1% in biggest rise of the decade
Drug prices leaped last year by 9.1 percent. That's the biggest increase in at least 10 years, Express Scripts found in its annual drug-trend report. Some common meds got double-digit increases, such as the 13.6 percent increase for Eli Lilly's antidepressant Cymbalta, or the 12.1 percent rise on Merck's cholesterol med Zetia. Could it be that drugmakers were preparing for the agreed-upon Medicare and Medicaid rebates in the healthcare reform legislation?

Psychiatric Drugging of Infants and Toddlers in the US
The United States has become the psychiatric drugging capital of the world for kids with children being medicated at a younger and younger age. Medicaid records in some states show infants less than a year old on drugs for mental disorders.

"Antipsychotics, which are being widely and irresponsibly prescribed for American children--mostly as chemical restraints--are shown to be causing irreparable harm," warned Vera Hassner Sharav, president of the Alliance for Human Research Protection, in a February 26, 2010 InfoMail.

Psychiatric Drugging of Infants and Toddlers in the US - Part II
Dr Nathaniel Lehrman, author of the book, "Coming Off Psychiatric Drugs," believes that giving infants and toddlers "powerful, brain-effecting psychiatric medication is close to criminal activity."

"Giving them these drugs," he says, "has no rationale, and ignores the basic fact that youngsters are very sensitive to their environments, both social and chemical, with the juvenile brain easily damaged by the latter."

Red flags overlooked in prescription drug death of 12-year-old
Dr. Steven L. Kaplan solved the 70-pound boy’s problems with a prescription pad, writing orders for two different anti-psychotic drugs along with a tranquilizer and a mood stabilizer — three of them in the highest doses recommended for adults, records show.

When state medical regulators sent Kaplan letters suggesting the dosages were worrisome, he ignored them.

Two weeks after Kaplan last saw the boy, on May 23, 2007, Denis simply stopped breathing. The Miami-Dade Medical Examiner’s Office attributed the death to a life-threatening side effect of over-medication, records show.

Orwellian Pills Spy on Your Compliance With Doctor's Orders
It sounds Orwellian—like science fiction. But the reality of every aspect of your biological processes being monitored by Big Pharma and your doctor—and whoever else might want to profit from it—is upon us. Novartis has just purchased the technology to encapsulate a chip inside a pill that allows doctors—and government and Big Pharma and and the compliance police—to monitor how well you're following orders to take pills. And see if you metabolize them properly, perhaps needing another drug to make the first one work better. And while they're at it...

Patients Reported Fractures Caused by Bone Drug Long Before Health Industry
Like Vioxx, Merck's other blockbuster whose side effects emerged after it was used/tested on the public, Fosamax was launched a month early thanks to its collegial relationship with the FDA. In fact the FDA waved Fosamax through so quickly-six months after its new drug application-Merck had to send a Dear Physician letter months later warning of esophageal side effects "of greater severity than we observed in our controlled clinical trials."

The case against HIV
It’s generally believed that HIV causes AIDS, in part because it seems incredible that “science” could be so wrong. But history of science teaches that it’s anything but incredible.

Does Benzene Contamination Activate 'HIV'?
So the catch 22 is that Histone Deacetylase Inhibitors (HDAC) can be used to reverse de-acetylation, methylation and the formation of matrix metalloproteineases (MMP's). So it makes HIV come out of the genome but the damage is being actually caused by the MMP's which are degrading the collagen matrix."

Mobile Phone Tumour Fears
“What makes me angry is that they continue to sell these phones without making sure that they are safe.” The evidence is mounting. Brain tumors are on the increase – even neurosurgeons are concerned. The industry stands firm, however, not all of them. David was just 30 years old when he underwent three operations to remove the tumor as big as a golf ball, around his acoustic nerve.
