Secrets of Microwave Cooking - Health Supreme NewsGrabs Friday, 2 April 2010
Cooking your food and warming your coffee or milk in the microwave violently shakes the molecules to heat them. This process may damage the structure and integrity of that food and alter the properties of any water contained in it.Healthy? You decide.

How To Prepare For Obamacare: Practice Self-Care
Bill Sardi on the US Health System
All health insurance plans promote irresponsibility. People just run to the doctor and believe their doctor is responsible for keeping them healthy, not themselves.Americans involved in the healthcare debate are arguing over the wrong issues. Americans want freedom to choose their health plan, their doctor, their hospital. This is not the problem. If you have no money, you can no more have the freedom to choose your doctor and health plan than to choose whether you would like to buy a Chevy or a Cadillac at the car lot. You can’t have these freedoms when treatment is no longer affordable. And why does the American public keep clamoring for care that doesn’t work and is even harmful?
Self care is an underutilized option. However, Americans have been trained to run to the doctor when anything ails them. The typical senior American is taking a number of inappropriate medications and afraid to stop taking any of them. To most Americans, self care means swallowing a bunch of overpriced pharmaceutical concoctions every morning. Most senior Americans are concerned that dietary supplements will interfere with their medicines, not the other way around.
I am making a protracted appeal to consider self care because I know Americans simply aren’t ready to embrace it. I have spoken with many Americans. If their health plan will provide them with a problematic pharmaceutical drug for $1 deductible in their drug benefits program, they will opt for the drug over a $15 dietary supplement solely because of cost. Forget that most drugs induce nutrient deficiencies and the patient will never get well. Dietary supplements are not paid for by health plans. The system is designed to only push patented man-made molecules on patients.
Essential oils to fight superbugs
Professor Yiannis Samaras and Dr Effimia Eriotou, from the Technological Educational Institute of Ionian Islands, in Greece, who led the research, tested the antimicrobial activity of eight plant essential oils. They found that thyme essential oil was the most effective and was able to almost completely eliminate bacteria within 60 minutes. The essential oils of thyme and cinnamon were found to be particularly efficient antibacterial agents against a range of Staphylococcus species.
Scientists find bacterium can halt dengue virus transmission
"In nature, about 28 percent of mosquito species harbor Wolbachia bacteria, but the mosquitoes that are the primary transmitters of dengue, Aedes aegypti, have no Wolbachia in them," said Zhiyong Xi, MSU assistant professor of entomology and study author. "We found that Wolbachia is able to stop the dengue virus from replicating. If there is no virus in the mosquito, it can't spread to people, so disease transmission can be blocked.""Only when we know the mechanisms underlying Wolbachia-mediated viral interference, will we will be able to [understand] why it's happening and further improve the efficiency of the viral interference," he said.
It's about time we started working WITH viruses, bacteria and insects, understanding their ecology and life cycles, instead of indiscriminately trying to kill, kill, kill...
Insecticide Sprays Linked to Rheumatoid Arthritis, Systemic Lupus
Women who frequently sprayed their homes with insecticides over a period of years may have put themselves at risk for autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and systemic lupus erythematosus, a researcher said here.Among women who sprayed at least six times a year, the risk of autoimmune disease was more than twice that of women who didn't use insecticides.
Psychiatry Professor Helped Forest Labs Cover up Bad Results of Antidepressant in Children
The U.S. Department of Justice has sued the pharmaceutical company Forest Labs about the marketing of the antidepressant Celexa for use by children. It’s an affair about bribery, illegal marketing and cover-up of a drug trial with negative results. The company has set aside $170 million to settle the civil aspects of the matter with the government. That does not cover the potential criminal law violations. What has not been told is the important role played by the renowned European Professor of Psychiatry Dr. Anne-Liis von Knorring in this affair. She not only helped the company to cover up the bad results of her clinical trial of Celexa, she also actively misled doctors and the public about it.
Vietnam Fines Schering-Plough For Kickbacks
Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung has ordered the Ministry of Health to impose penalties on the drugmaker and several Ho Chi Minh City docs who took kickbacks of up to $26,300 a month in exchange for promoting two drugs that treat viral hepatitis, The Saigon GP Daily reports. In my view, this case is hardly an exception but rather an example of how the business of selling pharmaceutical products is being routinely conducted...
Does READER'S DIGEST Shill for the Pharmaceutical Industry?
by Orthomolecular Medicine News Service
Reader's Digest's editors cannot possibly be as ignorant as their April 2010 article "5 Vitamin Truths and Lies" seems to indicate. Or can they?Surely their silly attempt at vitamin-bashing is merely an April Fool's joke. Isn't it?
Read over "5 Vitamin Truths and Lies" and decide for yourself. It is online ...
The Pharmaceutical Peer Review "Fig Leaf"
The concern is that this corruption of the peer review process leads to the promotion of defective drugs that cause harm and even kill people, whether it's Vioxx, Avandia, Zyprexa or the like -- toxic, dangerous drugs that were promoted within peer review. Independent scientists do not have access to the complete data on these newly patented drugs being promoted in scientific journals and elsewhere in the media. We should be able to ask authors for the actual data about which they are reporting.Industry controls the process and the data, it controls the clinical trials, the selection and design of the trials. It controls what is disclosed and what is concealed. What gets published and what gets put in the so-called "drawer". Peer review has become a fig leaf covering up make-believe peer review. It's not rigorous, not independent and not honest.
Call to end secrecy surrounding approval of new drugs
Questions about the benefits of the flu drug oseltamivir in otherwise healthy people have fuelled debate about the secrecy surrounding the documentation submitted by drug companies to obtain approval of new drugs, write Silvio Garattini and Vittorio Bertele' from the Mario Negri Institute for Pharmacological Research in Italy. They believe that greater transparency "would open drug dossiers to evaluation by the scientific community and help independent interested parties define the benefit-risk profile of new medicines before they are allowed on to the market."
FDA brushes aside CT scan safety issue
Julian Nicholas, a former FDA scientist, told a public hearing that he and other FDA staffers “were pressured to change their scientific opinion” after they opposed the approval of a CT scanner for routine colon cancer screening. Nicholas said he objected to exposing otherwise healthy patients to cancer risks of radiation and his job was eventually eliminated.“It is a sad commentary, for the FDA and for all those who work in HHS to promote Public Health, that when I documented and expressed my concerns about the radiation dose and concomitant risk of radiation induced cancer and leukemia, CDRH managers with no knowledge or training in Radiology or Gastroenterology or any other related science, chastised my concerns as ‘raising the bugaboo of radiation’."
That is a glimpse into the FDA that is normally kept well hidden ... at the service of industry rather than of public health.
HIV proteins in normal human placentae
Critics of the hypothesis that HIV causes Aids have long maintained that those "HIV specific" proteins aren't that specific at all and may be things to be found in normal human tissues. This study result is a first unequivocal confirmation of that view.
