Pfizer's Lipitor marketing - Health Supreme NewsGrabs Friday, 12 February 2010

Lipitor is a drug that impedes cholesterol synthesis in the liver in an attempt to prevent cardiovascular illness. In a mechanical sense, this would be like taking a hammer to the red warning light to handle the lack of motor oil. In the process, the drug unbalances other vital functions of the human metabolism.

Judging from the experience of many Lipitor users, the drug is dangerous. Side effects range from sometimes excruciating muscle pains to kidney failure, from disorientation and memory loss to incapacitation. Earlier articles on Health Supreme have accumulated a range of spontaneous comments from Lipitor users and their relatives that are heart-rending to consider in their full implications.

Pfizer should get into trouble for pushing that drug, in my view. Some of those earlier articles, for those who want to check this out further, are:

Neurological Side Effect: ALS, Alzheimer's

And by the way, if you have not come across this vital information yet in your Google searches, you may blame the search engine for tweaking results to de-emphasize links that are critical of a major advertising client...

Former Pfizer Exec Sues Over Lipitor Marketing
A former Pfizer exec has filed a whistleblower lawsuit that accuses the drugmaker of illegally scheming to boost Lipitor sales by misrepresenting product labeling and federal cholesterol guidelines; using misleading educational programs for doctors, and unlawful sampling kickback schemes, among other things, that resulted in off-label marketing that allegedly defrauded Medicaid and Medicare.

Jesse Polansky, who was director of outcomes management from April 2001 until July 2003, claims “thousands of physicians have prescribed Lipitor to millions of patients for whom drug therapy is not recommended, and for whom the medication could be dangerous. (Whole article is here)

Researchers develop dietary formula that maintains youthful function into old age
Researchers at McMaster University have developed a cocktail of ingredients that forestalls major aspects of the aging process.

The study found that a complex dietary supplement powerfully offsets this key symptom of ageing in old mice by increasing the activity of the cellular furnaces that supply energy—or mitochondria—and by reducing emissions from these furnaces—or free radicals—that are thought to be the basic cause of ageing itself.

Ingredients consists of items that were purchased in local stores selling vitamin and health supplements for people, including vitamins B1, C, D, E, acetylsalicylic acid, beta carotene, folic acid, garlic, ginger root, ginkgo biloba, ginseng, green tea extract, magnesium, melatonin, potassium, cod liver oil, and flax seed oil. Multiple ingredients were combined based on their ability to offset five mechanisms involved in ageing.

The longest witch-hunt in UK medical history draws to a close
A reading of the GMC's adjudication in the hearing does remind one how far the orthodoxy has needed to go to destroy the credibility of a group of doctors who were simply trying to get to the bottom of a condition, the frequency of which has been rising rapidly, and that is causing devastation to children and their families. Despite the GMC's strenuous attempt to damage Wakefield's credibility in particular, it seems to have done nothing to dampen the resolve of the doctors to continue work in this field, in particular to help patients and their families.

It's also worth noting that the GMC hearing concluded that monies used from the Legal Aid Board, that are central to the investigation over professional conduct, were not used for personal gain. They were used to fund further research on the issue. Yet, this is the basis for the declaration of Wakefield's 'dishonesty'.

Possible cancer cure found in blushwood shrub
Scientists have identified a compound in the fruit of the native blushwood shrub that appears to "liquefy and destroy cancer with no side-effects", according to latest research.

"There is a rapid knock-down of the tumour, it disintegrates within 24 hours and we have a rapid healing response.

"The biggest tumour we treated was the size of a Coke can in a dog, and that animal is fully healed and healthy."

Dr Gordon said it had worked on skin cancers, such as carcinomas and melanomas, and bone cancer, and was a possible treatment for breast, colon and prostate cancer.

But she warned wannabe human guinea pigs against seeking under-the-table treatment.

She said it was "immoral, illegal, and unscientific" to seek to be administered the drug before approval, likely to take up to seven years, by the Therapeutic Goods Administration.

Red wine and dark chocolate are cancer killers
Red grapes and dark chocolate join blueberries, garlic, soy, and teas as ingredients that starve cancer while feeding bodies, Angiogenesis Foundation head William Li said at a prestigious TED Conference.

"We are rating foods based on their cancer-fighting qualities," Li said. "What we eat is really our chemotherapy three times a day."

"There is a medical revolution happening all around us," Li said. "If we're right, it could impact on consumer education, food service, public health, and even insurance agencies."

Best Beers for Bone Health?
The old advertising slogan that "Guinness is Good for You" may have some truth to it after all. Every pint of the black stuff contains as much silicon as a pinch of sand -- and that silicon, according to recent but controversial research, may help to keep your bones strong in old age.

Silicon is common element in the Earth's crust found in many raw foods. Grains and fruits are loaded with it, and the human body contains a total of 5-10 grams. The beer brewing process extracts silicon largely from hops and the husks of grains and dissolves it into the liquid, where the body can easily absorb it.

MONSANTO'S GMO PERVERSION OF FOOD
By Byron J. Richards
In the 2010 growing season Monsanto plans to unleash its latest Frankenfood experiment on the American and Canadian public, a new version of genetically mutated corn with eight abnormal gene traits called Genuity SmartStax corn. It is the culmination of an astonishing scandal that has been steadily building over the past decade. During this time Monsanto’s mutated seeds have grown to 90% of the U.S. soy crop and 85% of the corn crop – and wheat is next on their agenda...

Use of acetaminophen in pregnancy associated with increased asthma symptoms in children
Children who were exposed to acetaminophen prenatally were more likely to have asthma symptoms at age five in a study of 300 African-American and Dominican Republic children living in New York City.

The researchers assessed the use of analgesics during pregnancy and found that 34 percent of mothers reported acetaminophen use during pregnancy, and 27 percent of children had wheeze, an asthma-related symptom. The children whose mothers had taken acetaminophen were more likely to wheeze, visit the emergency room for respiratory problems, and develop allergy symptoms, compared to those children whose mothers did not take acetaminophen. The risk increased with increasing number of days of prenatal acetaminophen use.

Anti-depressant linked to breast cancer deaths
Women taking a popular anti-depressant at the same time as a drug used to stop breast cancer recurring are more likely to die from the disease, doctors warn.

Researchers have found that the anti-depressant Seroxat can interfere with tamoxifen, which is prescribed to thousands of breast cancer survivors for five years at a time.

AstraZeneca facing 26,000 suits over Seroquel
AstraZeneca PLC is facing as many as 26,000 lawsuits over its antipsychotic drug Seroquel as the drug maker prepares for its first jury trial over claims the medicine causes diabetes, according to court filings.

Authors of a new study propose a strict ban on medical ghostwriting
Once medical publishing's "dirty little secret," ghostwriting is no longer under wraps, thanks in part to a 2009 federal court decision to release 1,500 documents describing the strategic placement of marketing messages into peer-reviewed medical literature. In their article Lacasse and Leo say these cleverly crafted advertisements from pharmaceutical companies shape the literature in subtle but important ways, and can even affect how clinicians perceive and prescribe treatments.

"Your typical family practice physician is bombarded with glossy reprints," Lacasse explains. "The more prestigious the university and the researcher's name on it, the more weight that's going to carry with the doctor."

UK: The men who made a killing out of swine flu while we wasted £1bn and were exposed to harmful drugs
In all, it is estimated that the companies behind the vaccines and anti-virals will scoop a £4 billion windfall from the pandemic.

GlaxoSmithKline has revealed that sales of its vaccine reached £835 million in the fourth quarter of 2009. Sales of the drug Relenza have also earned it hundreds of millions of pounds.

In the same period, Novartis notched up vaccine sales of more than £800 million, the vast majority coming from H1N1 sales.

Meanwhile, drugs firm Roche reported an 8 per cent rise in annual sales last year, helped by sales of the swine flu drug Tamiflu, with profits up 14 per cent to £8.89billion.

These companies vehemently deny having influenced the way in which the swine flu pandemic was managed.

British & Japanese Data Show Autism Correlated With Vaccines
We previously published data from Japan showing a clear causal link between changes in the Japanese vaccination schedules and corresponding increases and decreases in rates of children having autistic conditions:- Japanese Data Show Vaccines Cause Autism. The UK’s Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation’s irresponsible and only answer to the Japanese data was it was “not UK data”.

Data from the UK’s General Practice Research Database shows that with each major change in the UK childhood vaccination programme the rates of childhood autism have increased significantly.
