Marine aquaculture can feed the world - NewsGrabs Wednesday, 9 December 2009

There is some trouble feeding the world's population, at least there is a potential for a "food bottleneck" if we factor in growing population numbers. Organic agriculture and small scale local farming could help get past that bottleneck, but sooner or later we have to face the rather wasteful production of animal protein. There is a solution to that - we can grow very highly nutritious food by cultivating plankton, tiny creatures that live and multiply in sea water. They are very low on the food chain and supply great protein. Developing this food source could unburden the agricultural practice of animal husbandry, while still providing good nutrition for growing numbers of people.

Marine aquaculture could feed growing world population
Marine aquaculture is already on the rise: production has increased ten-fold over the past 30 years and is expected to exceed fisheries catches within 20 years. Yet Duarte and his colleagues argue that its continued growth will depend on adapting current techniques so that the food needed to feed marine animals is itself derived from marine aquaculture, rather than harvested from the wild or derived from agriculture.

This goal is achievable, they maintain, if more animals low on the food chain are cultivated, including more plankton and algae. These could be used as food for both humans and for fish.

Plankton is highly nutritious, it is presently being cultivated and expensively sold as a health food. Let's make real food out of it and feed ourselves in a sustainable way.

Fish Populations Reveal ‘Shocking’ Declines
Populations of numerous migratory fish species in the North Atlantic have declined by more than 95 percent, threatening not only food supplies and economic systems, but also the way humans perceive the health of the planet's ecosystems, according to a paper published today (Dec. 1) in the journal BioScience.

UK: Government ignores weight of public concern over Codex
Whilst the UK official line, that closely matches Codex’s own official line, is that "Codex Alimentarius is a series of food standards and related texts that aim to provide a high level of consumer protection and fair practice in the international trade of food and agricultural products", the reality is closer to total control of the food supply (which includes food supplements), based on criteria that better support corporate interests than those of consumers. Get too close to shining a spotlight on the increasingly ugly agenda and you see a lot of fancy footwork to ensure the appearance of acceptability under the guise of ‘consumer protection’ and removal of ‘trade barriers’.

Canadians urged to keep up pressure over unconstitutional Bill C-6
“C-6 abolishes protection from trespass, a court-ordered warrant, and the need for court-supervised search and seizure; it bypasses existing laws on privacy and confidentiality and explicitly exempts the Minister of Health and government inspectors from any kind of third-party oversight and accountability; the need to publish regulations governing the activities of the inspectors is abolished, too; accused individuals have their access to the courts seriously limited; even the assumption of innocence is gone; astronomical fines are to be handed out for crimes committed on the Minister’s assumption of guilt which requires no supporting evidence for independent examination; even the corporate shield would disappear, because corporate directors would be legally liable for the actions of their employees – which actions would be deemed criminal solely on the opinion of the Minister, not by the courts; finally, this bill allows foreign governments and institutions, like CODEX and the World Trade Organization, to have the same powers over Canadians in all these matters outlined above, as if they were part of our own government”

EU shock as Health Commissioner takes control of pharma
In a shock decision, pharmaceutical policy in the new European Commission will no longer be the responsibility of DG (Directorate General) Enterprise and Industry but will move to the Health and Consumer Policy directorate, DG Sanco.

Responsibility for the European Medicines Agency (EMEA) will be included in the portfolio of new Health Commissioner-designate John Dalli, currently the Minister for Social Policy in Malta. Mr Dalli will also take control of biotechnology, which moves to DG Sanco from DG Environment.

Japan: New GMO Food Additives To Be Introduced Without Full Safety Appraisal
The two GMO food additives FSC Expert Committee judged as safe are L-Glutamic Acid Sodium (GLU-No. 2 strain) and Aspartame-L-Fenylalanin (PHA-No. 2 strain). In the current food-labelling legislation, the former would be labelled only as “amino acid, and others” and would be used as a food additive in many foods.

The latter would be labelled only as Aspartame which is classified as an artificial sweetener. None of these will need to be labelled as GMO or otherwise identified as genetically modified under the current rules.

The FDA Wants to Declare Shock (ECT) Machines Safe Without a Safety Investigation
[The Food and Drug Administration] has allowed these machines to be used on millions of patients over the past generation without requiring any evidence whatsoever that shock treatment is safe or effective! This is so even though shock machines are Class III—high risk—devices, which by law are supposed to be investigated by clinical trials as thoroughly as new drugs and devices just coming onto the market. But because of intense lobbying by the American Psychiatric Association—which claims the devices are safe but opposes an investigation—the FDA has disregarded its own law.

Is It Right for Drug Companies to Carry out Their Own Clinical Trials?
Goldacre says that increasing evidence points to a conflict of interest for the drug industry which "results in bad evidence, which distorts medical decision-making, and harms patients."
One of the problems, argues Goldacre, is that the industry can choose which data to publish, and which to leave unavailable. He refers to the difficulties in getting clear information about the number of suicide attempts in industry trials of SSRI antidepressants or the number of heart attacks in individuals taking the anti-inflammatory drug rofecoxib (Vioxx).

FDA issued serious warning regarding Depakote in pregnancy
“The FDA notified health care professionals and patients about the increased risk of neural tube defects and other major birth defects, such as craniofacial defects and cardiovascular malformations, in babies exposed to valproate sodium and related products (valproic acid and divalproex sodium) during pregnancy. Healthcare practitioners should inform women of childbearing potential about these risks, and consider alternative therapies..."

Diet Drug with Cardiovascular Risks
On November 20, 2009 the FDA issued an "Early Communication about an Ongoing Safety Review of Meridia (sibutramine hydrochloride)" to let patients and their doctors know about a possible increased risk for adverse cardiovascular events associated with the obesity drug Meridia.

Medically caused deaths in America - An exclusive interview with Dr. Barbara Starfield
This interview with Dr. Starfield reveals that, even when an author has unassailable credentials within the medical-research establishment, the findings can result in no changes made to the system.

Yes, many persons and organizations within the medical system contribute to the annual death totals of patients, and media silence and public ignorance are certainly major factors, but the FDA is the assigned gatekeeper, when it comes to the safety of medical drugs. The buck stops there. If those drugs the FDA is certifying as safe are killing, like clockwork, 106,000 people a year, the Agency must be held accountable.

Nutritional Therapy for AIDS

This is a comment to an article that shows how Luc Montagnier, the discoverer of HIV, which is said to cause Aids, advocates less drugs and more nutrition in the treatment of Aids. The comment itself contains excellent information.

Canada: Few cases of suspected flu test positive
Public health officials are warning the wave of H1N1 this fall is not nearly as widespread as suspected, leaving a significant number of Canadians who believe they have gained a ticket to immunity still vulnerable to the virus.

Last week in Ontario, fewer than one in four cases of suspected H1N1 tested positive in laboratory analysis. In British Columbia, the rate was one in three. The rest, based on samples, were mostly rhinovirus – the common cold – and enterovirus, a common flu-like bug.

Swine flu: the pandemic that ended with a whimper
If it turns out that we have used a sledgehammer to crack a nut, my question is this: how did the virologists get the scale of the threat so wrong?

Vitamin C As An Antiviral: It's All About Dose
Our bodies cannot make vitamin C (ascorbate), although most animals can. We must get it from our food and from supplements. But how much do we really need? Persistent arguments on this question may be settled by looking at how much vitamin C animals manufacture in their bodies. The answer is: quite a lot. Most animals make the human body-weight equivalent of 5,000 to 10,000 milligrams a day. It is unlikely that animals would have evolved to make this much vitamin C if they did not need it and use it. Indeed, cells in many human body tissues concentrate vitamin C by 25-fold or more over blood concentration.

VITAMIN C AND ACIDITY - What Form is Best?
Vitamin C is commonly taken in large quantities to improve health and prevent asthma, allergies, viral infection, and heart disease. It is non-toxic and non-immunogenic, and does not irritate the stomach as drugs like aspirin can. Yet vitamin C (L-ascorbic acid) is acidic. So, a common question is, what are the effects from taking large quantities?

FRANCE chooses 16 towns to experimentally reduce maximum EM radiation level
In the debate about relay antennas and in general about electrosmog (radiation from artificial EMFs) a worldwide consensus is beginning to emerge, thanks in particular to the work of the independent scientists who have contributed to the publication of the BioInitiative report, which recommends as a preliminary measure a drastic reduction in the level of artificial HF microwave radiation to 0.6 V/m, ie. 0.1 μW/cm2.

Organizations and campaign groups all over the world are demanding that this maximum limit be applied because it would not harm the greater part of the public who are in reasonably good health. However the long-term objective is to remove this new form of [electromagnetic] environmental pollution by introducing an upper limit of 0.1 V/m or 0.003 μW/cm2 from all sources of emission combined.

Africa: Treating Poverty With Toxic Drugs
The HIV-antibody tests do not diagnose actual HIV-infection. Instead, they look for non-specific antibody reactions in your blood to proteins in the HIV-test. The test manufacturers claim that the proteins stand in for HIV, but in reality, none of the test proteins have been proven to be specific to HIV. These tests are, in fact, so nonspecific that they cross-react with nearly 70 other documented conditions, including the flu, previous vaccinations, blood transfusions, arthritis, alcoholic hepatitis, drug use, yeast infections and even pregnancy, as well as conditions endemic in Africa: tuberculosis, parasitic infection, leprosy and malaria.
