Swine Flu Virus may be Weak - NewsGrabs Thursday, 9 July 2009

Swine Flu Genes Show Virus May Be Weak
Preliminary evidence suggests that swine flu may prove relatively mild, though scientists warn against drawing firm conclusions from on-the-fly early research.

Wired.com has learned that Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory computer scientists Jonathan Allen and Tom Slezak did not find similarities between swine flu and historical strains that spread widely, with catastrophic effect.

Swine Flu Vaccine: Will We Have A Choice?
Barbara Loe Fisher, President National Vaccine Information Center talks about the swine flu and the vaccines that are being prepared.

French doctor accuses WHO of criminal malfeasance
French doctor Marc Girard – called as a expert medical witness in a trial over the deaths of people in France who took a Baxter vaccination against hepatitis B on the recommendation of WHO — says on his website that WHO is just as much a captive of commerical interests today as in the case of hepatitis B when he called for criminal charges to be brought against WHO.

Soil: The Foundation of Civilization
Soil is the foundation of civilization. The vast majority of people during the American Revolutionary era owned farms or were indentured servants or slaves that worked on them. Agricultural potential spawned a series of westward migrations in America. The Oregon Trail was built to pursue the promise of rich, fertile soil in the Willamette Valley of the Oregon Territory. As recently as the WWII era, a majority of Americans still lived and worked on farms. Only a small percentage of Americans work the soil today.

Where is "civilization" headed as we depart from its foundation? What are modern agricultural practices doing to our soil? How will civilization continue and remain viable with a depleting soil base?

Nature's folates work best - Korean study highlights benefits of natural nutrients
This study highlights, once again, that natural folates, abundant in green, leafy vegetables, asparagus and lentils, have more benefits and less risk than synthetic folic acid. Whilst there is little doubt as to the benefits of supplemental folic acid for reducing the risk of birth defects, when given to pregnant women, and those planning pregnancy; there are doubts as to the wisdom of giving higher doses of the synthetic vitamin to the older population, who may already have developed precancerous lesions in the gut.

Vitamin D Deficiency and Inflammation in Women
A University of Missouri study is the first to report a correlation between increased concentrations of an inflammatory marker called serum TNF-a and vitamin D deficiency in healthy women. This investigation may shed some light on the role vitamin D plays in preventing certain diseases associated with inflammation, including cardiovascular disease.

Researcher Catherine Peterson, an assistant professor at the University of Missouri, said her study results support the need to re-examine the biological basis for the dietary reference intake (DRI) for vitamin D.

Compounds from rosemary fight against mutagenic effects of radiation
In two separate studies, scientists in Spain found that nothing fights radiation damage to micronuclei like a simple garden herb known as rosemary. They noted that ionizing radiation causes the massive generation of free radicals that induce cellular DNA damage. They studied the protective effects of several compounds against gamma ray induced chromosomal damage in micronuclei testing by adding various compounds to human blood before and after irradiation. When the compounds were added after gamma-irradiation treatment, the protective effects relied not on scavenging ability, but on activity against free radicals already present in the cells, such as lipoperoxy radicals which are mainly responsible for continuous chromosomal oxidative damage.

The fact that carnosic acid and carnosol found in rosemary are fat soluble allows them to provide highly asignificant protective anti-mutagenic activity. Even the most powerful water-soluble antioxidants lack the capacity to protect against gamma ray induced damage.

Codex Adopts Key Provisions for Food Supplements - IADSA
The adopted Recommendations on the Scientific Substantiation of Health Claims now take into account the totality of the available relevant scientific data and weighing of the evidence for substantiating a health claim, rather than placing primary importance on human intervention trials.

IADSA also welcomed the adoption of the Nutritional Risk Analysis Principles, which it described as “a solid framework for the potential future application of the risk assessment method by Codex for the use of vitamins, minerals and other substances in food supplements”.

Food Democracy: South Africa Woolworth's Removes Aspartame
Food democracy, the growing trend whereby consumers are flexing their muscles and influencing decisions made by big food retailers and producers, is finding a foothold in South Africa. The first big retailer to pay close attention to what customers are saying, is Woolworths. In fact, it's in response to requests from customers that Woolworths has become the first South African retailer to remove aspartame from its foods.

BASF abandons GM Potato research abandoned in the UK
ANH Comment
Although this article uses quotes in the form of “It’s a sad and backward step….”, and “a great shame”, and is obviously written from a pro-GM point of view, we are delighted at the news. It is a huge result for pro-natural lobbyists and underpins what most of us know already – that we the people the people of Europe really don’t want GM products. Other countries, such as Austria and Hungary, have already imposed bans on GM and Germany is well on its way to following their example.

Carbohydrate acts as tumor suppressor
Scientists at Burnham Institute for Medical Research (Burnham) have discovered that specialized complex sugar molecules (glycans) that anchor cells into place act as tumor suppressors in breast and prostate cancers. These glycans play a critical role in cell adhesion in normal cells, and their decrease or loss leads to increased cell migration by invasive cancer cells and metastasis.

It appears that tissue integrity is an important defense against tumor metastasis. There is an example of earlier research involving vitamin C and Lysine here: Enzyme Block Stops Cancer Spread

Medicine in a New Key
Conventional medicine is dying, ultimately because it is based on an obsolete dominant mechanistic model that does not recognize the coherence of the organism. Dr. Mae-Wan Ho explores how a science of the organism could underpin a new organic medicine.

Rethinking Aids Conference in Oakland, California
“Rethinking AIDS, Connecting Questioners, Reigniting Debate”
The conference will be held November 6th to November 8th at the Waterfront Hotel

Rethinking AIDS 2009 will bring critiques of the HIV=AIDS=Death dogma to the forefront, where scientists, doctors, HIV-positive people, journalists and others interested in the reasons for the failures of the AIDS industry can hear from some of the top experts. The conference will also be a networking opportunity for people struggling for scientific freedom and integrity in AIDS research, struggling to protect people against legal assaults based on this flawed theory, and for positive people looking for assistance with their health concerns without a sole focus on HIV.

Electromagnetic Fields - Killing Fields
At Christmas time, the Cellular Phone Task Force placed a small classified ad in a free weekly newspaper. It read: 'If you have been ill since 11/15/96 with any of the following: eye pain, insomnia, dry lips, swollen throat, pressure or pain in the chest, headaches, dizziness, nausea, shakiness, other aches and pains, or flu that won't go away, you may be a victim of a new microwave system blanketing the city. We need to hear from you.' And we did hear from them. Hundreds called, men, women, whites, blacks, Asians, Latinos, doctors, lawyers, teachers, stockbrokers, airline stewards, computer operators. Most had woken up suddenly in mid-November, thinking they were having a stroke or a heart attack or a nervous breakdown, and were relieved to know they were not alone and not crazy.

French Green Party adopts motion to limit electromagnetic radiation
They recommend the adoption of an overall limit to exposure of the general public: 0.6 V/m for hyper frequencies (mobile phones, wifi, wimax, cordless phones) and 0.25 micro tesla for extremely low frequencies (electric current, power lines, transformers etc.)
They also demand that epidemiological studies of cumulative exposure be performed and that environmental assessments and future legislation should consider the impact of electromagnetic radiation.

200 percent increase in cardiovascular medication costs $5 billion in Canada
The number of prescriptions in Canada for cardiovascular medications has been increasing over the past decade, with a 200% increase in costs, found a new study in CMAJ (Canadian Medical Association Journal). In 2006, total costs of cardiovascular medications exceeded $5 billion, with statins accounting for almost 40% of the expenditure.

Perhaps this kind of cost overrun will finaly force health officials to look again at the cost/benefit ratio of statin drugs and to confront their hugely destructive side effects (see Lipitor: Side Effects And Natural Remedy)

Muscle damage may be present in some patients taking statins

Here is a first timid admission (see previous link) that maybe, maybe, statin drugs do have some heavy side effects (like dissolving people's muscle tissue causing much pain and - in extreme cases - death by kidney failure).

Are Clinical Trials Rigged?
“Many medical journals are becoming marketing instruments for the drug companies," Sidney Wolfe, M.D., Director of Public Citizen's Health Research Group, said.

A new study finds 2 percent of scientists admit they have fabricated, falsified or altered data to improve the outcome at least once. About 35 percent admit to questionable research practices. A JAMA study reveals that 30 percent of the original research studied was either false or exaggerated. Problems include small study size, design flaws, publication bias and failure to publish negative results.

Florida: Psych drug rules for foster kids ignored
Child-welfare doctors and case managers routinely failed to complete legally required treatment plans, share information or properly document the prescribing of powerful psychiatric drugs for children, according to a new state study of 6- and 7-year-olds medicated in state care.

It is insane to give powerful psychiatric drugs to kids to begin with - and then the minimal rules to make sure the damage done isn't too great get disobeyed as well. Perhaps use of those drugs on kids should be outright prohibited!

Zimbabwe: Health Ministry looks into vaccine effects
Health Minister Dr Henry Madzorera had earlier said his ministry was aware of the reports of prolonged side effects, adding that investigation teams would be deployed to assess the situation.

"We have been hearing about these cases from media houses and parents, but our health centres have not given us any detailed reports with regard to these claims.

"As a ministry, we are going to carry out investigations to determine if these cases are true. What usually happens is that most children experience a fever that lasts for a day or two after immunisation," said Dr Madzorera.

US: Legislation Introduced to Require First Comparative Study of Vaccinated vs. Unvaccinated Populations
Reps. Carolyn Maloney (D-NY) and Christopher Smith (R-NJ) have introduced the “Comprehensive Comparative Study of Vaccinated and Unvaccinated Populations Act of 2009,” HR 3069, legislation that would require the Secretary of Health and Human Services to conduct a comprehensive, peer-reviewed, comparative study of vaccinated and unvaccinated populations, which has never before been completed.

“Vaccines have been instrumental in reducing the incidence of many once-common diseases, but we owe it to parents and children to study and resolve the questions that have arisen over the possible link between vaccines and neurological disorders,” said Maloney.

That should be an interesting study, if it ever does get done. If you live in the US, please consider asking your Representative to support this noble initiative!

Yet, a pandemic has already been declared! So, WHO'S drawing firm conclusions??

True, a pandemic has been declared, and it seems on the flimsiest of actual real world data. The definition of what is a pandemic, I hear, had to be changed before arriving at the pronouncement.

In real terms, the swine flu is not very different from the normal seasonal flu, neither in terms of severity of symptoms, nor in terms of numbers of deaths caused or even in terms of numbers of countries it appears in. So what's new, and why is WHO drawing those very firm conclusions that appear to contradict the actual data on severity of the disease.

Like AIDS before it, the swine flu epidemic appears to be a predominantly definition-driven and pharmaceutically augmented problem.
