Vitamin C Prevents Gout ... but don't take those nasty supplements - NewsGrabs Wednesday 11 March 2009

Vitamin C Prevents Gout
Men who get plenty of vitamin C may boost their resilience to the painful joint disease gout, a study suggests. The US researchers believe vitamin C has a dual action - easing inflammation and lowering uric acid levels in the body that go awry in gout.

Compared with men who did not take vitamin C supplements, those who took 1,000mg to 1,499mg per day had a 34% lower risk of gout and those who took more than 1,500mg per day had a 45% lower risk.

If you read the BBC article, you will get a taste of how schizophrenic our public health policy has become. On the one hand, studies document the positive effects of high dose supplementation, but ... "Experts warned that the news should not be taken to mean that it was fine to lead an unhealthy lifestyle and pop a vitamin pill" ... "Generally, people should be able to get all the vitamin C they need - 40mg a day - by eating a varied and balanced diet" ... and ... "It would be unwise for people to think they can compensate for eating and drinking too much by taking vitamin C with their pint of beer."

Now can anyone explain to me how people are supposed to get 1000 to 1500 mg or more of vitamin C for a real preventive effect by eating what's "found in sprouts, peppers and oranges"?

So the official watchword seems to be: "Prevention yes, but by golly don't take those nasty supplements!"

ANH online petition on unfair EU restrictions on vitamins and minerals
The European Commission is about to limit the maximum available dosages of vitamin and mineral food supplements across the 27 Member States of Europe. The setting of such limits was suggested by a directive on food supplements passed in 2002. The petition put up by the Alliance for Natural Health (ANH) aims to positively influence the approach the European Commission is taking in its efforts to set such limits.

There is concern that many vital nutrients could be limited in a misguided effort to "protect consumers" from the improbable effects of vitamin overdose. The European Commission claim that it is a just a noisy minority concerned about restrictions vitamin and mineral levels across the EU. It is now crucial to show them otherwise!

Please read the petition and sign it if you agree. Target: 500.000 signatures by June.

Is the EU Commission ready to abandon harmonization of all supplement ingredients?

According to a recent communication by the nutrition consultancy EAS, an opinion of the EU Commission says that perhaps other substances than vitamins and minerals should not be harmonized by the EU, as envisaged in food supplements legislation. This would seem to be, in my opinion, an indication that the ambitious project to harmonize vitamin and mineral sources in food supplements is not going too smoothly.

The European Food Safety Agency is having a hard time to examine and issue opinions on all the substances that are being used as vitamin and mineral sources in supplements. They likely would be completely out of their depth if they had to standards for "other ingredients" such as oils, aminoacids, vegetable extracts, herbs and such. Perhaps the realization is finally dawning that not everything in our lives should be regulated by government fiat ... well enough.

Study suggests salt might be 'nature's antidepressant'
Most people consume far too much salt, and a University of Iowa researcher has discovered one potential reason we crave it: it might put us in a better mood.

Experiments by Johnson and colleagues indicate similar changes in brain activity whether rats are exposed to drugs or salt deficiency.

"This suggests that salt need and cravings may be linked to the same brain pathways as those related to drug addiction and abuse," Johnson said.

ANH: 'Codex misinformation creates public confusion'
One of the rumours that abounds suggests that Codex will ban a wide variety of food supplements as of 31 December 2009. This is wrong. This date refers to the end of the transition phase of the European Food Supplements Directive which brings in a ban after this date of any vitamin or mineral food supplement that has ingredients not yet approved and added to the Directive's ingredients list.

California: Proposition 65 Carcinogen Identification Committee looks into Aspartame
Aspartame is one of the chemicals identified by the Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment of the California Environmental Protection Agency in a preliminary toxicological evaluation as possible candidates for elimination or restriction under what is known as Proposition 65, a law intended to limit environmental health hazards.

There is a deadline for comments to be submitted: 5 May 2009. Someone should submit scientific documents (studies) that prove aspartame is a carcinogen or anyway a health hazard...

Fraud Case Rocks Anesthesiology Community
In what experts are calling one of the largest known cases of academic misconduct, a leading anesthesiology researcher has been accused of falsifying data and other fraud in potentially dozens of published studies.

A cornerstone of Dr. Reuben’s approach has been the use of the selective cyclooxygenase-2 inhibitor celecoxib (Celebrex) and the neuropathic pain agent pregabalin (Lyrica), both manufactured by Pfizer. Dr. Reuben has received research grants from the company and is a member of its speakers’ bureau. However, a source told Anesthesiology News that Pfizer recently alerted its speakers to remove any reference to Dr. Reuben’s data from their presentations. Pfizer was unable to comment by the time this article went to press.

Statistics on Acceptance of GM Crops Exaggerated
The acceptance of GM crops has been exaggerated, says a report released by the environmental group Friends of the Earth International in February 2009, which criticises the industry-funded International Service for the Acquisition of Agri-biotech Applications (ISAAA) for inflating statistics on GM crops grown in the world.

The ISAAA brief promises greater yields by planting GM seeds. Yet there has not been a single case of increased yield with commercial GM crops. As Friends of the Earth remarks, even the USDA has admitted to no increase in yield potential for any commercial GM crop in use today. In many cases, GM crops have been found to yield less that traditional varieties.

Ex-Employees Claim Johnson&Johnson Off-Label Marketed Risperdal
Among the many lawsuits floating around against makers of atypical antipsychotics is one brought against J&J/Janssen by former company sales reps, alleging that they were retaliated against for complaining about allegedly being pressed by the company to market Risperdal off-label for a host of conditions other than its then-approved use in schizophrenia. among other conditions, they allege that the company off-label marketed the drug for bipolar disorder well in advance of its approval for acute mania in 2003, for example.

Merck and Schering-Plough Merger may bring loss of 16.000 jobs
The various news articles are stating that Merck needed to refresh it’s portfolio and pipeline and Schering has quite a bit to offer as well as many products on long term patent protection. There is quite a bit of synergy between the two and of course they have been “test” dating on a few cholesterol products lately....

There will be significant job losses and some numbers being bandied about are about 16,000 jobs.

What I don't get is that with government support going almost exclusively to gigantic corporations, because they are "good for the economy" and against small and medium sized companies supporting natural medicine alternatives, why is it that we rejoice about pharma employing lots of people but then we accept and apparently overlook it completely when tens of thousands of jobs are lost in one fell swoop of "restructuring". Doesn't make quite sense, does it?

The Betrayal of a Nation's Children - by Martin Walker
Hiding Vaccine Damage for the Greater Good
Martin Walker, author of 'Dirty Medicine' and several other books critical of the medical establishment, is closely following the case in the UK that sees Dr Andrew Wakefield and other researchers under attack for having dared to submit a paper associating the MMR vaccine with some cases of autism. Read his article "The Urabe Farrago".

NO AUTISM In Never-Vaccinated Children
Homefirst's medical director, Dr. Mayer Eisenstein, told us he is not aware of any cases of autism in never-vaccinated children; the national rate is 1 in 175, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. "We have a fairly large practice," Eisenstein told us. "We have about 30,000 or 35,000 children that we've taken care of over the years, and I don't think we have a single case of autism in children delivered by us who never received vaccines.

Adverse Health Effects of Digital Broadcast Television
Within a radius of more than 20 km, the following symptoms that occurred abruptly were reported: constant headaches, pressure in the head, drowsiness, sleep problems, inability to think clearly, forgetfulness, nervous tensions, irritability, tightness in the chest, rapid heartbeat, shortness of breath, depressive mood, total apathy, loss of empathy, burning skin, inner burning, leg weakness, pain in the limbs, stabbing pain in various organs, weight increase.

Birds had fled the area. Cats had turned phlegmatic and hardly ever went into the garden. One child committed suicide; a second child tried doing it. Over time the same unbearable symptoms showed up in other locations...

Imagine a world without copyright
Copyright was once a means to guarantee artists a decent income. Aside from the question as to whether it ever actually functioned as such - most artists never made a penny from the copyright system - we have to admit that copyright serves an altogether different purpose in the contemporary world. It now is the tool that conglomerates in the music, publishing, imaging and movie industries use to control their markets.

These industries decide whether the materials they have laid their hands on may be used by others - and, if they allow it, under what conditions and for what price. European and American legislation extends them that privilege for a window of no less than 70 years after the passing of the original author. The consequences? The privatization of an ever-increasing share of our cultural expressions, because this is precisely what copyright does.
