EU Food Supplements Directive 'will Harm Health' - NewsGrabs 22 February 2009
Food Supplements Directive - Head of Irish Nutrition Institute warns of Health Harm
Much of the preventable disease burden across Europe is caused or compounded by intake deficiencies of vitamins, minerals and essential fatty acids. None of it is caused by excessive intakes of these essential micronutrients. An increasingly nutrition-aware European population is consuming more supplements than ever. Decades of widespread use across Europe and N America have proven nutrient supplements to have an enviable safety record, so this is a positive trend. The FSD in its current form will severely limit forms and dosages of micronutrient supplements and will thus have the effect of harming the health of European citizens.

Vitamin Deficiency Underlies Tooth Decay
Cavities and gum diseases are not often regarded as serious diseases, yet they are epidemic throughout our society, from the youngest of children to the oldest of senior citizens. Research more than suggests that the same good nutrition that prevents cavities and gum diseases may also prevent other illnesses.
Ending the Atrocities
By William Faloon of the Life Extension Foundation
A startling number of reports reveal the FDA is in far worse shape than originally thought. Few people comprehend that they are likely to suffer and die prematurely as a result of FDA’s failures. The media does a decent job reporting on FDA disasters. The apathetic public, however, often forgets what they read the next day. That is, until they are diagnosed with a serious illness. Then they go into a panic mode to find an effective treatment. All too often, however, the cure does not exist because of FDA bureaucratic roadblocks. In other cases, the FDA-approved drugs available induce horrific side effects.
It is our mission to memorialize these tragedies to demonstrate the urgent need to radically reform the FDA. This “state-sponsored” carnage of the American citizenry must be stopped!
Online networking 'harms health'
A lack of "real" social networking, involving personal interaction, may have biological effects, he suggests. He also says that evidence suggests that a lack of face-to-face networking could alter the way genes work, upset immune responses, hormone levels, the function of arteries, and influence mental performance.
This, he claims, could increase the risk of health problems as serious as cancer, strokes, heart disease, and dementia.
My comment, also sent to the BBC: Social scientists are in a tizzy because there is some mode of direct interaction between people they do not understand. To say that social networking is bad for your health and even trot out dangers of "cancer, strokes, heart disease and dementia" is just a hair's breadth from pure speculation.
So what is, we should ask, their agenda?
Scientists Condemn Human Experiment with GE Food
The experimental rice has been highly contentious and now scientists are condemning feeding experiments being undertaken with human subjects by other researchers at Tufts University. The plans include testing the food on children. One report states:
"This project is to determine the vitamin A value (equivalence) of dietary provitamin A carotenes from spinach, Golden Rice, and pure ß-carotene (ß-C) in oil. These experiments will be conducted in children (ages 6-8) with/without adequate (marginal deficiency) vitamin A nutrition." *(3)
"Allowing human feeding trials of this experimental rice is highly concerning and a frightening breach of human rights," says Jon Carapiet from GE-Free New Zealand.I am not sure I agree with this. One of the main points we are making against genetically modified foods is that they are sold in the absence of trials on how they affect human health. If there are no trials, how are we ever going to find out with certainty what the real effects are?
US Government Busts Monsanto for Bribery
According to online news stltoday.com bribery and corruption allegations involving Turkish officials and Monsanto were settled today with a US$300,000 payment. Furthermore the US Government will once again monitor Monsanto’s dealings. The Government ordered monitoring of Monsanto’s external dealings after a previous conviction for bribery in 2005.
US Government Fails to Protect Its Citizens from Artificial Sweetener Aspartame
Not only has my life been changed by aspartame in ways that are apparently never going to be reversed (my eyesight and my memory) but recently I had a very hard time acquiring health insurance. The insurance underwriter actually told my insurance agent that he ran across 6,000 cases like mine (people claiming aspartame made them sick) a month. Now I do not know how many people his location underwrites in a month, whether he meant 6,000 people a year, whether he was exaggerating or even whether my agent was being honest with me. It is just one more piece of my aspartame story and one more way it has left it's ugly mark on my life.

Publication of flu vaccines studies in prestigious journals are determined by the sponsor
Dr Jefferson concludes: "The study shows that one of the levers for accessing prestige journals is the financial size of your sponsor. Pharmaceutical sponsors order many reprints of studies supporting their products, often with in-house translations into many languages. They will also purchase publicity space on the journal. Many publishers openly advertise these services on their website. It is time journals made a full disclosure of their sources of funding."
Seroquel maker wants to seal info from you, "for" you
AstraZeneca, maker of the blockbuster antipsychotic Seroquel, is battling to keep information about the drug out of the public's view … for the public's own good.Vince Boehm comments: Zeneca wants to conceal vital drug safety information from physicians and the public on grounds that the release might panic a "vulnerable patient population".As I think about it, there are certain things that a person is better off not knowing. For example, a person will sleep a lot better if he does not know how sausages or laws are made. But, a person needs all the drug safety information he can get. His life may depend on it.
It's the Cymbalta Stupid
Many are outraged that Eli Lilly gave nonprofits $3.9 million in grants last year for medical courses to "educate" doctors about the pain-and-fatigue ailment fibromyalgia--more than it spent for diabetes and Alzheimer's which people already know they have. But finding new diseases to justify a drug's existence is the normal way pharma operates.
Patients deserve facts about drug
The company is claiming public safety, saying it shouldn't be required to release information about the drug that could cause a panic among "a vulnerable patient population" that might stop taking the drug without a doctor's oversight. But the real public safety issue is one of public health and whether the company hid findings that Seroquel causes weight gain and diabetes. The legal system must put public health — and a patient's right to know — above a company's interest in secrecy.
Do You Have Fibromyalgia?
Pfizer gave nonprofits $2.1 million in grants in 2008 for medical courses about the pain-and-fatigue ailment fibromyalgia for which its Neurontin follow-up pill, Lyrica, just happens to be approved.Fibromyalgia, with no clear cause, blood test, definition or cure "is almost a textbook definition of an unmet medical need," enthused Pfizer VP Ian Read in a conference call to analysts when the drug first launched.
No kidding! Datamonitor predicts the fibro market can be "grown" from $400 million to $2 billion thanks to all the people who don't know they have it yet.
Aids: It's official - CD4 counts don’t count!
Measurements of peripheral (in the blood) CD4 cells have been a mainstay in research and treatment. Voices raised to point out the error of this, those of Heinrich Kremer or Juliane Sacher among others, have been studiously ignored. But now it’s become quite official:“’In both studies, the volunteers who received IL-2 and antiretrovirals experienced notable, sustained increases in CD4+ T cell counts, as anticipated,’ notes NIAID Director Anthony S. Fauci, M.D. ‘Unfortunately, these increases did not translate into reduced risks of HIV-associated opportunistic diseases or death when compared with the risks in volunteers who were taking only antiretrovirals. Although further analyses may help us better understand these findings, the two studies clearly demonstrated that the use of IL-2 did not improve health outcomes for HIV-infected people.’”
Reduce the Burden of the Aids diagnosis
This is a new site focused on reducing the intensity, burden and stigma of the Hiv and Aids diagnosis. Reduce The Burden explores recorded histories of both conscious and unconscious racism in science and medicine, and the reach of eugenic thought and pathological science into our current Aids paradigm. The site is a group effort, and is accepting submissions
Spain Withdraws HPV Vaccine Gardasil after Two Hospitalizations
Spanish health authorities have withdrawn tens of thousands of doses of a vaccine against cervical cancer after two teenagers who received the shots were hospitalised, regional authorities said on Tuesday.A batch of nearly 76,000 doses of the human papillomavirus vaccine (HPV) was withdrawn from market, a government statement said, after two girls in the eastern Valencia region fell seriously ill hours after receiving them.
Although a batch was withdrawn, the vaccine is back and being used but ... let's not forget that there is no certainty that HPV actually CAUSES cancer or that the vaccine actually prevents it. HPV is a very common virus in many variants that is quite benign, and some of those variants are ALSO found in women who have cervical cancer. Association, by the way, does not prove causation. It has not been conclusively demonstrated that the virus causes cancer - yet hundreds of thousands of women are given the vaccine ...
Dangers of HPV Vaccine Production in Plants, Microbes, and Viruses
Human papilloma virus (HPV) vaccines are already commercialised and promoted worldwide in a bid to protect young girls and women from cervical cancer, while there is still major uncertainty over their efficacy and safety, especially in the long term. One obstacle to the adoption of the vaccines by developing countries is that the two available are very costly. There appears to have been a rush to create cheap oral HPV vaccines in transgenic plants, microbes and viruses that do not require refrigeration and can be distributed relatively inexpensively, but would involve widespread releases of hazardous transgenes and products into the open environment.A safety issue that has been persistently ignored by regulators is horizontal transfer of transgenes to unrelated species. GM microbes and viruses have the strongest potential to transfer transgenes horizontally and contribute to creating new pathogenic bacteria and viral strains Recent evidence confirms that transgenic DNA does jump species to bacteria and even plants and animals...
Petition to Obama: Investigate Gardasil Vaccine Risks NOW!
My comment: This vaccine is a "tip of the iceberg" example of how far wrong our medical system has gone. No wonder we have huge costs and bad results to boot. Deep reform is needed.
THE MMR VACCINE IS NOT HOLY WATER
Undeterred by the verbal and legal assaults, his research continued. He told of a time when he hand-delivered well-designed studies to a top Merck executive, imploring him to examine the data that strongly suggested an association between the measles virus and autism. In a follow up conversation with this very senior executive, Dr. Andy asked, “Did you bother to read any of those studies I gave you?” The Merck executive flatly replied, “We don’t have to.”We don’t have to? Does that mean Merck makes the rules about the MMR? Does that mean Merck can deny the research of Dr. Wakefield, and subsequently, many others who have seen a correlation between the MMR and autism? One thing is certain: The good doctor poked a stick in the eye of an unfriendly giant named Merck. The giant joined forces with his powerful buddies in the Public Health Department and British National Health Service. Together, they have worked every angle to ensure that Dr. Wakefield’s reputation would be destroyed and any connection between the MMR vaccine and autism would be negated.

EUROPEAN REFERENDUM INITIATIVE - Reject the Lisbon Treaty!
The 2008 U.S. presidential elections have demonstrated how important it is that the people have the right to terminate the rule of a regime that no longer represents their interests. However, the Lisbon Treaty would exclude such a possibility for the people of Europe - for this and all future generations.
Europe is becoming a meddlesome bureaucracy that wants nothing more than control our lives in the most minute detail, even down to what vitamins we "may" consume and what a farmer must do with his animals and crops. This can only lead to catastrophe. We should re-think our approach to EU integration. It's either going to be for the people and with the people, or it's against ... and for now the direction looks like it's going to be the second.
I just got rid of all those "energy saving" CFL lightbulbs in my house ... here's why
I've been hearing from different people about the radiofrequency emissions of compact fluorescent or CFL bulbs, 'dirty electricity' is a term to search for that. They are the new recommended light bulbs and governments all over the world are getting ready to forbid the old ones. But then - with the need to conserve electricity and all that, I was kind of half-heartedly starting to substitute the new "good" bulbs for those dirty old wasteful glow lamps that waste some of the energy as heat, also known as the infrared band. So I had about six of those CFL glass spirals in use, and a few new ones waiting for more of the old bulbs to konk out and be substituted.
Then, this morning, I read an email from my friend Rob and changed my mind. I unscrewed those bulbs that had snuck their way into my electric system and, together with the new ones, brought them to the garbage bin down by the street...
