'Responsible use' of antibiotics urged - NewsGrabs 7 December 2008

EU commissioner urges 'responsible' use of antibiotics
The pace at which antibiotics are losing their effectiveness against bacteria such as Escherichia coli (E. coli), a bacterium often causing urinary tract infections, is "alarming," according to the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC).

"The aim of this awareness day is to inform the general public about when and how to take antibiotics and why responsible antibiotic use is so important".

The day is an annual European public health initiative to raise awareness about the problem of antibiotic resistance, and to provide information on how everyone can contribute to preserve the efficacy of antibiotics.

The ECDC say doctors, nurses, pharmacists, politicians and consumers need to be made aware of the dangers of improper use of antibiotics.

This announcement is really barking up the wrong tree. It seems designed to make us believe something is being done about growing antibiotic resistance. In reality, the vast majority of all antibiotics produced are not used by humans but are fed to farm animals mixed in with their feed, both for "preventive" use and to promote growth. From there they enter the human food chain, and since those antibiotics have widely contaminated our foods and the environment, bacteria are evolving resistance through continuous contact with them.

If we wanted to do something effective, we should ban or at least seriously restrict antibiotic use in the raising of farm animals. I'd bet the problem of growing bacterial resistance to antibiotics would quite magically subside.

Lack of vitamin D could spell heart trouble
"Vitamin D deficiency is an unrecognized, emerging cardiovascular risk factor, which should be screened for and treated," said James H. O'Keefe, M.D., cardiologist and director of Preventive Cardiology at the Mid America Heart Institute, Kansas City, MO. "Vitamin D is easy to assess, and supplementation is simple, safe and inexpensive."

It is estimated that up to half of U.S. adults and 30 percent of children and teenagers have vitamin D deficiency.

Get some of those precious rays. The sun - which produces vitamin D in our skin starting from cholesterol - may be more important than we believe. And naturally, don't artificially lower your cholesterol either. It's the very raw material for making the life-saving vitamin, apart from being a universal transporter for many substances in the blood stream. (Cholesterol Is Not the Bad Guy)

Scientists show function of helical band in heart
With each beat of the heart, a wave of contraction starts at the heart's apex--which, despite its name, is actually at the very bottom of the heart--and then travels up through the myocardium. "The only time the whole helix shows up in the images is at the end of systole, which is when the heart is contracting," says Gharib. "This simple band structure is akin to an engine behind the heart pumping action."

My comment: Good research. The helix or vortex is being shown to have great importance in an ever increasing number of natural processes.

Regarding the heart, the next discovery should be the low importance of the "pump" concept relative to the idea that the heart's main function is not to supply pressure but rhythmic timing to the flow of blood. That would shift the emphasis from pressure to the stabilization of blood circulation which could also function without a pump.

Research on mice links fast food to Alzheimer's
Mice fed junk food for nine months showed signs of developing the abnormal brain tangles strongly associated with Alzheimer's disease, a Swedish researcher said on Friday.

"On examining the brains of these mice, we found a chemical change not unlike that found in the Alzheimer brain," Susanne Akterin, a researcher at the Karolinska Institutet's Alzheimer's Disease Research Center, who led the study, said in a statement.

GM Maize Reduces Fertility & Deregulates Genes in Mice
Austrian scientists carried out long term studies that showed GM maize fed to mice significantly reduced their fertility over three to four breeding cycles within one generation [1]. Similar effects were found in mice fed GM maize and bred over four generations; although the results did not reach statistical significance in any one generation, the trend was unmistakable, more pups lost and smaller litters in the GM-fed mice.

The Power of the Placebo — Is Healing All in Our Mind?
Integrative medicine has been dismissed time and again as “the placebo response.” Chelation? Oh, it’s just a placebo. Homeopathy? Again, it’s just a placebo. Yet patients now flock to the doors of integrative physicians who brave the ire of their state medical boards to offer health programs based upon natural approaches and physical, emotional, and spiritual balance. They know that the mind-body connection is vital to a patient’s health.

Food as an overarching issue - Michael Pollan
Bill Moyers at PBS interviews Michael Pollan, author of the book In Defense of Food.

Pollan makes some very important points here about our health and what we eat, and about the movement that is springing up all over the place to actually start growing our own food again.

Electromagnetic Hypersensitivity And Iron Overload: A Biogenic Magnetite Mechanism?

James Beal of EMF Interface Consulting asks whether hypersensitivity to electromagnetic radiation which is becoming more common as our technical em wave emissions saturate the environment, could be connected with the presence of tiny crystals of magnetite - direction-sensitive iron molecules embedded in biological tissues - in areas of the human organism. An interesting concept that deserves to be further explored.

Aspartame induced seizures are not uncommon: Betty Martini
In reply to a Belgian study that documented a seizure after excessive consumption of diet coke Betty Martini replied to Dr Luc Mortelmans with information that seizures are a common occurrence for people who regularly consume aspartame, a neurotoxic sweetener approved by the FDA over the contrary recommendations of their own scientists.

Over 500 Deaths Per Year Associated with Children's Cough and Cold Medicine
“Up until this new research, officials assumed that there were only 3 or 4 deaths a year from these medications” says Dr. Jeffery L. Chamberlain, the family doctor and co-founder of Honey Don’t Cough, who performed the mathematical extrapolation. “Deaths have been drastically underreported because when a child gets sick and dies, doctors assume that the death was solely related to the illness itself. Typically, no one thinks to check for toxic medications that could have contributed to the death.”

Escape cancer, but age sooner? The dark side of the tumor suppressing process
While Campisi emphasizes that chemotherapy can cure cancer, she says the study provides a cautionary note for younger patients who receive treatments that could promote the development of further cancers later in life. Campisi said the study points out the need for new biologically targeted therapies for cancer that exploit more specific differences between normal and cancer cells. Current DNA damaging chemotherapy focuses on cells that divide rapidly - impacting cancer cells, as well as all dividing cells...

Italy: Cash and Prostitutes for False Prescriptions
An Italian drugs supplier bribed doctors and pharmacists across the country to issue bogus prescriptions in return for cash and sex with Colombian prostitutes, PharmaTimes writes. Forty four people, including medics, pharmacists and wholesaler employees across south and central Italy have been held, some under house arrest, in connection with the $12 million scam.

Risperdal Causing Breast Development In Boys
... there are now solid reports of teen boys who developed breasts as a result of taking the atypical antipsychotic Risperdal. The WallStreetJournal's Health blog reported on this last week as well:

"One particularly troubling side effect is the growth of breasts in some male patients taking Risperdal. Steve Sheller, a lawyer in Philadelphia, represents six teenage boys seeking compensation from J&J after they developed breasts while taking Risperdal. Sheller says their problems stem from prolactin, a hormone involved in lactation, that can be elevated in males and females who take the medicine. Two of the boys he represents required mastectomies to get rid of their bosoms.

"The company has denied in court papers that it is culpable for the plaintiffs’ injuries ..."

Risperdal is one of those antipsychotic 'medicines' that corrupt psychiatrists push on children for simply being depressed or for not showing enough attention in a boring school environment.

Australia: 4000 kids under 10 on mood drugs
"At first pass it is beyond comprehension that more than 500 Australian children - aged one to five years - have received an anti-depressant drug.

"When the particular drugs are considered, the risk of significant side effects - let alone their efficacy - is of key concern. It strikes me that there would be wisdom in having the doctors justify such prescriptions to determine whether there are any justifiable reasons for such surprising data."

Lancet Slams Atypical Antipsychotic Safety, Efficacy
In the NIMH-funded study, researchers performed a meta-analysis of 150 studies of atypical antipsychotics--Zyprexa, Risperdal, Seroquel, etc.--where they had been trialed against a first generation antipsychotic in treating schizophrenia. Much as with the landmark 2005 CATIE study and the CUTLASS study of 2006, researchers found almost no advantage of using atypicals instead of the older, vastly-cheaper drugs (atypicals run anywhere from 10 to 20 times the cost of generic antipsychotics). Researchers also found that study subjects gained more weight on some of the atypicals, a potentially troubling sign of diabetes and the metabolic syndrome.

ADHD drug causes psychosis, hallucinations, mania
The manufacturer, Eli Lilly, has now changed the label for Strattera in Europe to include warnings that Strattera CAUSES “hallucinations, delusional thinking, mania or agitation in children and adolescents without a prior history of psychotic illness or mania … at usual doses”.

This is by Janne Larsson, a Swedish investigator who has been hounding the Swedish and UK health authorities over the side effects of Strattera, many of them involving patient suicide, for several years. Eli Lilly was finally forced to list the side effects on the drug label.

Why a medicine used to "treat" an inability to pay attention in school and which has deadly side effects stays on the market at all is a mystery.

Forced Psychiatric Drugging Questioned
Alison Cobb, senior policy and campaign's officer at the mental health charity, Mind, said forcing patients to take medication against their will was "extremely distressing" for them.

"Their freedom is taken away and people are often left feeling powerless, frightened and helpless."

US: Mothers Act Promotes Pregnancy as Cottage Industry
Ever since the warnings about birth defects started trickling out a few years ago, the drug companies apparently have been plotting to find ways to reverse their negative impact. But the most sinister plot ever developed is a bill moving for approval in the US Senate right now called the "Melanie Blocker-Stokes Mother's Act," to set up the screening of all pregnant women for mental illness.

DTC Ads Were The ‘Worst Decision:’ Roche Exec
Those direct-to-consumer ads you see in the US have been a big mistake for the global drug industry, undermining the reputation of the sector in the eyes of patients, William Burns, who heads Roche’s pharmaceuticals group, tells a conference in London.

“Direct-to-consumer promotion was the single worst decision for the industry,” says Burns. “When industry says we’re spending all the money on R&D but actually it’s spending it on TV advertising to preserve margins, it doesn’t get much credibility.”

Study: Depakote Linked To Autism
Depakote is also known as valproate in generic form. It is an anti-seizure drug that is commonly used in both epilepsy and bipolar disorder, in the latter case as a so-called mood stabilizer. Increasing the risk of autism by seven times should really give women pause who take this drug.

A study just out in Neurology "showed children whose mothers took Epilim [Depakote's UK name] during pregnancy were seven times more likely to develop the condition [autism] compared with babies whose mothers did not take an epilepsy drug."

Global AIDS crisis overblown? Some dare to say so
Roger England of Health Systems Workshop, a think tank based in the Caribbean island of Grenada, goes further. He argues that UNAIDS, the U.N. agency leading the fight against the disease, has outlived its purpose and should be disbanded.

"The global HIV industry is too big and out of control. We have created a monster with too many vested interests and reputations at stake, ... too many relatively well paid HIV staff in affected countries, and too many rock stars with AIDS support as a fashion accessory," he wrote in the British Medical Journal in May.

"By putting more money into AIDS, we are implicitly saying it's OK for more kids to die of pneumonia," England said.

Ending the Genocide of the Pharmaceutical Drug Cartel - Call for a Second 'Nuremberg' Tribunal
For a quarter of a century, millions of people with HIV infections and AIDS, especially in the developing world, have received highly toxic chemicals deceptively named anti-retroviral (ARV) drugs. They have been told that these toxic drugs fight the HI virus in their bodies - but not told that they also attack all other cells in the body and destroy the immune system.

For 25 years the pharmaceutical cartel has operated one the most malicious marketing schemes in the history of mankind: promoting toxic drugs that damage the immune system to millions of patients already suffering from acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS). The results have been predictable: a growing wave of drug-induced immune deficiencies in genocidal proportions.

Toward a New Economic Order
The problem then becomes, how do we transcend the barter limitation, i.e., the "double coincidence" of wants or needs? While commodity money can be useful in particular circumstances (it was common in early post-war Europe, to pay with cigarettes, Hershey bars, and nylon stockings), I believe that the more evolved form of credit money is more appropriate to the goals of personal freedom, social justice, peace, harmony, and economic equity. I have no gold or silver. What I do have to offer to the market is goods and services. You, likewise, probably have no gold or silver, but offer other goods and services to the market. Ultimately, we each pay for the things we buy with the things we sell. In other words, goods and services buy other goods and services. It is much more efficient to simply sell to one another on credit, and then spend our credits to requisition whatever we may want from others in the market. The supply of any chosen commodity (like gold or silver) is limited and most of the gold and silver is closely held by those who run the system, the central governments and central banks. They decide the price we must pay for those commodities. But credits can be created as needed at minimal cost so all desirable trades can take place.

Theory Explains Low Energy Nuclear Reactions & Why They Are Safe and Green
In contrast to hot fission and fusion associated with the controversy over nuclear weapons and the potential of a nuclear war in the aftermath of WWII, Enrico Fermi’s beloved weak interactions became somewhat neglected. It was looked upon more as a scientific curiosity of theoretical interest with no practical applications. After all, every physicist and chemist ‘knows’ that radioactive beta decay rates are mainly low-energy and, being random, cannot be controlled; and hence useless for power generation applications. Also, no one considered the possibility of creating neutrons directly via the weak interaction; there just didn’t seem to be any reasonable way to get weak interaction rates high enough to be useful. The Widom-Larsen theory of LENRs and hundreds of credible experiments have demonstrated otherwise.

Readers' Comments

I agree that the use of antibiotics in farm animals is likely part of the problem, but I think that is just the tip of the iceburg. Certain types of bacteria have been shown to demonstrate a 'magnetic sense' (see below). Could the proliferation of wireless technologies in recent years (cell phone towers) be behind the emergence of superbugs and antibiotic resistance?...

'Cross Currents' by Robert O. Becker M.D. – page 72.

"In 1975, Professor Richard Blakemore, also of Woods Hole Marine Biological Laboratory, became intrigued by the strange behavior of some bacteria he was studying. Blakemore noticed that the bacteria always clustered at the north side of their culture dish. Even if he turned the dish so that they were at the south end and left it overnight, the next morning the bacteria were back at the north side. While such "magnetotrophic? bacteria had been described before, no one had ever done what Blakemore did next: he looked at them under the electron microscope. What he found was astonishing. Each bacterium contained a chain of tiny magnets! The magnets were actually crystals of the naturally magnetic mineral magnetite, the original lodestone of preliterate peoples. Somehow, the bacteria absorbed the soluble components from the water and put them together in their bodies as the insoluble crystalline chain.

Later studies showed that this arrangement was of value to these bacteria, which lived in the mud on the bottom of shallow bays and marshes. If they were moved by the tide or by storm waves, their magnetic chains were large enough (in comparison to their body size) to physically turn their bodies so that they pointed down at an angle corresponding to the direction of magnetic north. All the bacteria had to do was swim in that direction, and sooner or later they would be back in the mud. This was an interesting mechanism, but it did not contain any sophisticated information transfer. The bacteria did not "know? that north was the way to swim; they just did so. However, these observations opened up a much more interesting series of investigations."

Interesting point about the magnetic bacteria. That brings to mind an item contained in these same newsgrabs: "Electromagnetic Hypersensitivity And Iron Overload: A Biogenic Magnetite Mechanism?" Whether this all ties in with the bacteria developing resistance to antibiotics, I really don't know. But certainly, we are ignoring the electromagnetic mechanisms in cells and organisms at our own peril. Using pulsed microwave radiation for communication may be a very stupid thing to do, and perhaps when all the data are in, we'll slap our foreheads in wonderment of how we could ever have done such a thing!
