Fish oil better than statin drug - NewsGrabs 7 September 2008

Fish oil better than statin drug
Fish oil supplements may work slightly better than a popular cholesterol-reducing drug to help patients with chronic heart failure, according to new research released this week.

With few effective options for heart failure patients, the findings could give patients a potential new treatment and could change the dietary recommendations for them, said Dr. Jose Gonzalez Juanatey, a spokesman for the European Society of Cardiology, who was not connected to the research.

A very reluctant acknowledgement that drugs are not the way to go - and not only statin drugs. Most pharmaceutical drugs produce free radicals, which act against the patient's good health. Foods such as fish oil do not have this drawback. They provide needed metabolic raw materials without the destructive interference typical of drugs.

Study finds B-vitamin deficiency may cause vascular cognitive impairment
"Metabolic impairments induced by a diet deficient in three B-vitamins - folate, B12 and B6 - caused cognitive dysfunction and reductions in brain capillary length and density in our mouse model," says Aron Troen, PhD, the study's lead author. "The vascular changes occurred in the absence of neurotoxic or degenerative changes."

"The B-vitamin-deficient mice also developed plasma homocysteine concentrations that were seven-fold higher than the concentrations observed in mice fed a normal diet," adds Troen.

British conductor claims vitamin C reversed his cancer
Vaughan's survival was threatened when his prostate specific antigen (PSA) count started rising. Rather than undergoing surgery, radiotherapy or chemo, Vaughan opted for high dose intravenous vitamin C injections.

The treatment is regarded as unorthodox simply because it's not yet recognised by the orthodox medical establishment. Alternative cancer practitioners have long known its benefits.

Low Cholesterol Increases Cancer & Death Risk
The American Heart Association recommends an LDL level of 100 for prevention and 70 for high risk patients. In the new study an LDL level of 107 was associated with a 33% increased risk of cancer and death, an LDL level of 87 was associated with a 50% increased risk. As the LDL goes lower the risk keeps getting worse. These arbitrary AHA levels for LDL cholesterol were established by “experts” with direct financial ties to the statin industry, who knew full well that reaching their artificially low target levels for LDL would require double and triple doses of statin drugs, thus dramatically increasing sales.

Bayer under investigation for bee deaths
The investigation was triggered by an Aug. 13 complaint filed by German beekeepers and consumer protection advocates, a Coalition against Bayer Dangers spokesman, Philipp Mimkes, said Monday.

The complaint is part of efforts by groups on both sides of the Atlantic to determine how much Bayer CropScience knows about the part that clothianidin may have played in the death of millions of honeybees.

Poison In Your Stomach: Genetically Modified Eggplants
Prof Dave Schubert of the Salk Institute... in California: "The Bt toxin is 1000 times more concentrated than in Bt sprays, which do not themselves have a history of safe use."

After experimenting with rats, goats, sheep and cows, it is now the turn of Indian people.

UK: Secret plan to fluoridate the nation's water supply
Critics said the 'mass medication' of water without the population's consent was an invasion of their human rights. They also accused dentists of being in denial about the dangers of fluoride, which has been linked to diseases including brittle bones and cancer.

Philippines: Lawmaker wants artificial sweeteners banned
A Philippine lawmaker has filed a bill that seeks to ban artificial sweeteners that contain the food additive aspartame, which is reportedly dangerous to health.

House Bill 4747 seeks to ban the use of aspartame on food, beverages and drugs such as instant breakfasts, cereals, frozen dessert, gelatin dessert, yogurt, milk drinks, shake mixes, cocoa mixes, beverages such as coffee, tea and juice, soft drinks...

Sweden: Pharma Drug side effects cause 35 % of hospital emergencies in older people
(Article is in Swedish)
A study of 40 patients aged 72 - 100 admitted to the emergency room at Karolinska universitetssjukhuset, Huddinge showed that in 35% of the cases, pharma drug side effects, interactions between incompatible drugs and sloppy monitoring were the major contributing factors that necessitated emergency treatment.

Arthritis drugs can cause serious fungal infections
Some patients with invasive fungal infections who were taking the drugs have died, according to the FDA. The drugs Humira, Cimzia, Enbrel, and Remicadeare are used to treat rheumatoid arthritis, juvenile arthritis, certain types of psoriasis, Crohn's disease, and other immune system disorders.

Counterfeit pharmaceutical drug sales growing
It is the staggering expansion of the counterfeit medicine problem—expansion that's occurring at approximately twice the rate of 'legitimate' pharmaceutical trade—that spells yet another major hazard for those wedded to the notion of new-to-nature, patented drugs based medicine.

A survey reported in the European Alliance for Access to to Safe Medicines' latest report, suggests that as much as 62% of medicines purchased over the internet in the EU may be counterfeit!

Idaho presses case against best-selling medication
My friend Vince comments:
Idaho is the latest state to sue the Eli Lilly Company, on allegations that the company defrauded the individual states because of deceptive marketing practices and hidden problems with the meds. These actions significant because neuroleptics such as Zyprexa to states and other governmental organization represent a reported 70%+ of total sales of products in this entire class of medication.

Zyprexa has been marketed since 1999. Disclosure of the diabetes dangers came only in 2004, after the American Diabetes Association, the American Psychiatric Association, the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists and the North American Association for the Study of Obesity published a joint statement confirming the association between Zyprexa and diabetes.

Independent researcher, Dr David Healy, studied FDA raw data on Zyprexa and concluded that this product was among "the deadliest drugs ever to gain FDA approval."

Director Of Controversial TMAP Program Leaves
John Rush, the director of a controversial Texas program called T-MAP, which was created to implement a state system for treating psychiatric disorders, has taken a job in Singapore, where he has joined the Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School Singapore as vice dean for clinical sciences.

Why is TMAP controversial? The state filed a lawsuit against Johnson & Johnson’s Jannsen unit for allegedly using false advertising and improper influence - such as grants, trips and other perks - to get its Risperdal antipsychotic on the now-mandatory adult protocol, the Texas Medication Algorithm Project. Drugmakers also reportedly paid decision makers to promote their meds.

PsychRights Sues State of Alaska to Stop Its Massive, Harmful Psychiatric Drugging of Alaskan Children
Jim Gottstein, the president of PsychRights and the attorney bringing the lawsuit, said, “The corrupt influence of the pharmaceutical industry in illegally promoting much of this psychiatric drugging of children has been well established, yet the State of Alaska continues to inflict great harm on the children it has taken away from their families by giving them these drugs.” It is ludicrous that the State sued a drug company for fraud in hiding the harm caused by one of these drugs and still gives that same drug and other toxic drugs like it, to children.

UK: Serious health concerns about cervical cancer vaccine
In America, where the vaccination programme using Gardasil has been in place since June 2006, some experts are now expressing unease about the scheme. Twenty seemingly healthy girls died within a few days of being injected with the vaccine which has a similar generic make-up to Cervarix.

These deaths have been dismissed as coincidence by Merck who make the American jab...

The War On Cancer Has Proven To Be A Giant Fraud

This article examines the war on cancer and the proven, but largely unacknowledged cancer preventive porperties of one of our dietary minerals - selenium. It is not new but a darned good read anyway, as they never do tell us the whole story!

Declaration for Healthy Food and Agriculture
The Declaration is meant to provide

1. A clear statement of what kind of policy is needed now, which is endorsed by a broad base of organizations and individuals with a long established commitment to a healthier food and agriculture.

2. An invitation to all Americans to join in the improvement effort by taking action in their own lives and communities and by offering them a way to call on policymakers to comprehensively support change.

3. A set of principles from which policy makers may craft policy that will lead to a healthier system.”

The EU strikes back - at the media and bloggers
The EU has had an issue with the internet for a while now (consistently documented by Richard North). Basically they don't like the internet because they can't control it. So today the European Parliament’s Culture Committee has voted for a report (here is the draft) which proposes that the EU should regulate blogs.

The argument for Open Access to Public Sector Data
“I’d like to argue that any data gathered by a government organization should be made openly accessible online. Open access, means absence of all legal, technical and discriminating restrictions on the use or redistribution of data.
