Healing wounds with Vitamin C - NewsGrabs 17 August 2008

Healing wounds or having surgery? Don't forget Vitamin C!
When wounds heal, the body's metabolic requirements increase. In the first few days following a major injury or surgery, the body's vitamin C may fall to dramatically low levels. In one hospital study, the vitamin C levels of critically injured patients were uniformly at severe scurvy levels. Only high doses (multi-gram) of vitamin C, but not milligram amounts, were effective in restoring blood levels for this vitamin back to normal. Why is it so important to re-supplement vitamin C?

Lower vitamin D, higher risk of death
Low levels of vitamin D may raise a person's risk of premature death, a study by Johns Hopkins researchers shows.

The research follows other recent studies showing low levels of vitamin D are linked to certain cancers, diabetes, and bone and immune system problems, but this is the first research to connect vitamin D deficiency to a higher risk of death, says study author Erin Michos, assistant professor of cardiology at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in Baltimore.

Pain 'linked with low vitamin D'
Dr Hyppönen said work was needed to evaluate whether vitamin D supplements could help prevent chronic pain. In the meantime, she advised: "If I had chronic pain I would certainly check I was getting enough vitamin D."

Yet another study on vitamin D. There have been many in the past year or so. For my idea of why this is, see Vitamin A and D - Synergy and Balance.

University opens new integrative medicine center
"The uniqueness of our program is that we not only embrace Eastern and Western philosophies, but we try to integrate the traditions of New Mexico," said Dr. Arti Prasad, the center's director. Thus, Native American healers and Hispanic curanderas are invited to work with patients at the clinic.

MSG use linked to obesity
Researchers at UNC and in China studied more than 750 Chinese men and women, aged between 40 and 59, in three rural villages in north and south China. The majority of study participants prepared their meals at home without commercially processed foods. About 82 percent of the participants used MSG in their food. Those users were divided into three groups, based on the amount of MSG they used. The third who used the most MSG were nearly three times more likely to be overweight than non-users.

"Animal studies have indicated for years that MSG might be associated with weight gain," said Ka He, M.D., assistant professor of nutrition and epidemiology at the UNC School of Public Health. "Ours is the first study to show a link between MSG use and weight in humans."

US inquiry claims 'safe' insecticides cause health problems
"The alarming rise of pesticide-related incidents attributed to pyrethrin and pyrethroid-affiliated products is a serious concern for the millions of households that use them," CPI executive director Bill Buzenberg said today.

"The Centre for Public Integrity uncovered this public safety issue through more than a dozen freedom of information … requests and crunching the data. This should be basic public information if the EPA were doing its job."

How to kill pests without killing yourself or the earth...
(link from stephentvedten.blogspot.com - blog censored by Blogger)
There are about 50 to 60 million insect species on earth - we have named only about 1 million and there are only about 1 thousand pest species - already over 50% of these thousand pests are already resistant to our volatile, dangerous, synthetic pesticide POISONS. We accidentally lose about 25,000 to 100,000 species of insects, plants and animals every year due to "man's footprint". But, after poisoning the entire world and contaminating every living thing for over 60 years with these dangerous and ineffective pesticide POISONS we have not even controlled much less eliminated even one pest species and every year we use/misuse more and more pesticide POISONS to try to "keep up"!

>How to safely remove pubic lice
(link from stephentvedten.blogspot.com - blog censored by Blogger)
The crab lice removal products that you will find at the drugstore are all pesticides that are highly toxic. Unfortunately, we are being bombarded daily by more and more toxins in our environment and the last thing you want to do is to add to the toxic load that you are carrying. Most substances that you put on your skin will get absorbed and you do not want to toxify your skin to absorb pesticides!

Prince Charles warns GM crops risk causing the biggest-ever environmental disaster
Relying on "gigantic corporations" for food, he said, would result in "absolute disaster".

"That would be the absolute destruction of everything... and the classic way of ensuring there is no food in the future," he said.

"What we should be talking about is food security not food production - that is what matters and that is what people will not understand.

"And if they think its somehow going to work because they are going to have one form of clever genetic engineering after another then again count me out, because that will be guaranteed to cause the biggest disaster environmentally of all time."

The Depressing Side of Medical Science
In Let Them Eat Prozac, David Healy, professor of psychiatry at Cardiff University and an acknowledged expert in psychopharmacology, shows how the efficacy of the drugs has been very much exaggerated and their dangers very much played down. He also describes the lengths to which the industry has gone to promote the widespread prescription of anti-depressants and to avoid responsibility for their side effects.

FDA Psychiatry Chief Helped Pharma Design Trials For Pediatric Bipolar Disorder
Laughren has a potentially huge conflict of interest and was deeply involved in helping "America's Pharmaceutical Research Companies" design clinical trials for the disorder. That would seem to be at-odds with his role as a federal regulator whom one would expect to be a disinterested, unconflicted reviewer of clinical trials submitted to the FDA. So far, the FDA has declined to comment on Laughren's role.

Corruption - Pharma Front Groups and the FDA
The most insidious pharmaceutical industry front group is the Center for Medicine in the Public Interest (CMPI), which is the stomping ground of high ranking FDA officials -- both current and former. We first learned about CMPI -- its funding source and smear campaigns -- from an investigative report by Shannon Brownlee and Jeanne Lenzer in Slate (May 2008). They reported that former FDA associate commissioner, Peter Pitts, is President of CMPI as well as Senior Vice President for Health Affairs at Manning, Selvage & Lee (MS&L), one of the largest PR firms whose major clients are the pharmaceutical company giants.

FDA: Chemical in plastic bottles is safe
Food and Drug Administration scientists said the trace amounts of bisphenol A that leach out of food containers are not a threat to infants or adults.

"It's ironic FDA would choose to ignore dozens of studies funded by (the National Institutes of Health) — this country's best scientists — and instead rely on flawed studies from industry," said Pete Myers, chief scientist for Environmental Health Sciences.

Australia: Pan founder Jim Selim gets $55m settlement
You may remember the disastrous closing of Pan Pharmaceuticals in Australia some years ago, which shocked the world of food supplements by recalling over 1600 products, many of them nutrient products used every day by thousands. At the time, I argued that the action was exaggerated, completely out of proportion to the actual problem being chased down. Now Pan founder Jim Selim has won a settlement with the government of Australia and its Therapeutic Goods Administration, confirming that indeed what happened then should never have happened.

HOW COULD THEY ALL BE WRONG? DOCTORS AND AIDS
As Harvey Bialy, scholar in residence at the Biotechnology Institute at the University of Mexico and editor at large of the prestigious science journal Nature Biotechnology puts it, the HIV theory of AIDS "turns immunology upside down and inside out." To begin with, never before was the presence of antibodies taken to be prognostic of future disease. They used to be thought of as good things – evidence, where the patient appears healthy, of a successful immune response to a pathogen defeated. Former molecular biology professor at Johns Hopkins and Harvard Universities, Charles Thomas predicts that after the balloon pops, historians will be studying the flight of common sense in the lunacy of the AIDS age, "for a 100 years, ...how America gave AIDS to the world."

German Beekeepers Slam Bayer & Pesticide-Intensive Agriculture for Killing off the Bees
On Jul. 15, six German apiarists moved their 30,000 bees into Munich city, some 500 km south of Berlin. They were trying to save their bees from genetically modified maize crops near their village Kaisheim, some 80 km from Munich.
