Why Mobile Phone Masts are more dangerous than Phones - NewsGrabs 30 March 2008

Health Supreme's NewsGrabs - a selection of contrary and underprivileged news in health and a wide range of (mostly) related sectors. Find what trends you may have missed - watch out for the weekly News Grabs.

Here is this week's selection for you:

Why mobile phone masts can be more dangerous than the phones
So how does this form of biological feedback relate to mobile phones and their masts? Put very simply, because of the extreme sensitivity of at least some living cells to weak non-ionising radiation, the question is not why the weak radiation from a distant mast does so much damage, it is why a handset next to the ear doesn’t do very much more.

The answer lies in our own negative feedback systems. The body is well able to detect the radiation and the resulting damage. It then puts into action a range of negative feedback measures to mitigate the effects. One of the most damaging effects of this form of radiation is the loss of some of the calcium that normally strengthens cell membranes...

Brief, high doses of B vitamin (folic acid) blunt damage from heart attack
In a new study, an international team of heart experts at Johns Hopkins and elsewhere report that rats fed 10 milligrams daily of folate, also known as folic acid or vitamin B9, for a week prior to heart attack had smaller infarcts than rats who took no supplements. On average, researchers say, the amount of muscle tissue exposed to damage and scarred by the arterial blockage was shrunk to less than a tenth.

It's an animal study, but interesting nevertheless.

Rectal artemisinins rapidly eliminate malarial parasites
Derived from sweet wormwood, artemisinin has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for thousands of years. In the 1990s, researchers recognised its antimalarial activity and since then a number of safe and effective artemisinin derivatives have been developed. These drugs, given by mouth, as a rectal suppository or injected into a vein or muscle have been shown to rapidly reduce heavy parasite infection. Oral artemisinin-based combination treatments now form the basis of antimalarial treatment policies in most malaria endemic countries.

Suppositories are easy to administer and the World Health Organization Malaria Treatment Guidelines currently recommends rectal artemisinins as a pre-referral treatment for severe malaria.

FDA Quietly Acknowledges Medical Benefits of Honey
Using honey to treat wounds is nothing new; even ancient civilizations used it in this manner. However, this is the sort of thing that usually gets relegated to "folk healing". It seems scientifically obvious: honey is very acidic (antibacterial), and it produces its own hydrogen peroxide when combined with the fluid which drains from a wound! The extremely high sugar content of honey means it contains very little water. So, it draws the pus and fluid from the wound, thereby speeding the healing process. Furthermore, the honey contains powerful germ-fighting phytochemicals from the plants that produced the pollen harvested by the honeybees. Having already been accepted by the overseas mainstream medical community for some time, North America finally caught on.

Action: California Targeting Safe Supplements - Don't Let Them Succeed
The National Health Federation has consulted with outside legal counsel specialized in this area of law for the express purpose of stopping this idea from proceeding beyond its conceptual stage. NHF will be in attendance at the April 18th meeting and will be submitting cogent written comments, assisted by scientific and legal experts, opposing this regulatory "concept." The Federation is also exploring legal action against the Agency should it proceed in any way with implementing its concept. This is critical and will affect individuals, supplement manufacturers, and vitamin retailers. This is not just a California issue. Anyone who depends on supplements for their health or livelihood must voice their opposition.

In the meantime, the NHF asks all interested parties to sign our on-line petition opposing this ridiculous concept, which the Federation will then personally submit to OEHHA. (Go to http://thenhf.com/press_releases/prop65_petition.htm) The NHF also asks all interested parties to provide us with any scientific and legal data that they might have supporting our position that vitamins and minerals are not carcinogenic and therefore do not belong on the Proposition 65 list, so that all pertinent information may be included into the Federation's comments and possible lawsuit.

EU rejects plea to outlaw 'dangerous' food colours that lead to hyperactive children
The study was funded and designed by scientists from Britain's Food Standards Agency. However, the European Food Safety Authority has decided flaws in the way the research was drawn up mean it does not offer definitive evidence of a risk to the general population.

Evidently for the EU bureaucracy, the dangers of additives need to be proven beyond doubt, while the dangers of nutrients (vitamins and minerals) are assumed to exist, to the point where it is up to manufacturers of supplements to "prove" that these nutrients are safe. Go figure.

Doctor Questions Safety of Aspartame for Diabetics
H J Roberts, M.D. talks about the role of the pancreas, the chemical aspartame, and how sweeteners containing aspartame affect the pancreas, in support of the Senate Concurrent Resolution 191, by Hawaii Senator Suzanne Chun Oakland, asking FDA Commissioner to Rescind Approval for Aspartame.

New drugs approved for EU Market - unethical trials
The Centre for Research on Multinational Corporations (SOMO) and the Wemos Foundation present new evidence that 'unfair' drugs, medicines which have been unethically tested in low-income and middle-income countries, are being given approval for use on the European market. They call upon the European Parliament to take urgent action.

Video: Barroso says European Union is 'empire'
In response to a question on where the new constitution will bring the European Union, what kind of entity it will be, Jose Manuel Barroso, President of the European Commission - the executive body of the EU - likens the union to an empire.

New Movie Damns Monsanto's Criminal Behavior
The gospel according to Monsanto is that their patented GM seeds and their bovine growth hormone (BGH) will increase worldwide production of agricultural, dairy and meat products and Bt cotton to the extent that worldwide hunger and poverty will be eradicated.

The actual truth is rather the opposite. GMOs are creating serious damage all over the world and artificial BGH injection in cows cause numerous health problems, and even death.

Monsanto: Percy Schmeiser wins moral victory
Although the Schmeisers eventually wound up losing their court battle with the St. Louis-based company in a landmark Supreme Court of Canada decision in 2004, the couple have now earned a moral victory that they hope will encourage others to carry on their cause.

Yesterday, Monsanto agreed to pay the Schmeisers $660 to settle a small-claims court case they brought against the company for costs associated with removing the patented Roundup Ready canola from their field in 2005.

Transgenic Cotton Offers No Advantage
The use of transgenic cotton does not provide increased returns to the farmer. This is the conclusion of a 4-year study reported in Agronomy Journal by researchers at the University of Georgia and the US Department of Agriculture. The researchers grew a number of different cultivars of cotton at two locations in the state of Georgia. The transgenic varieties consisted of two main traits, herbicide tolerance and Bt biopesticides, alone and variously combined.

Pesticide blunders: How not to kill a raccoon
(link from stephentvedten.blogspot.com - blog censored by Blogger)
Not only do pesticides stay around in the environment, slowly poisoning wildlife and insects, they also kill (as thousands of dead farmers in India can confirm) or seriously injure people. California's Department of Pesticide Regulation has documented some of the injuries Californians inflicted on themselves with pesticides - Steve has an article on his blog...

The pills that make us fat
WALK down any street in America and you'll see the effects of the "obesity epidemic". Two-thirds of adults, more than 130 million people, are now considered overweight, and nearly half of these are classified as obese. Those who are overweight by 45 kilograms or more are the fastest-growing group of the overweight in the US.

Yet one culprit is rarely mentioned: the broad range of psychiatric drugs that can cause substantial weight gain. They include drugs marketed as antidepressants (such as amitriptyline, doxepin and imipramine), mood stabilisers (including lithium and valproate) and antipsychotics (including clozapine, olanzapine and chlorpromazine). After 10 years on lithium, for example, two-thirds of patients put on around 10 kilograms.

Antidepressants Linked To Type 2 Diabetes
While analyzing data from Saskatchewan health databases, Lauren Brown, researcher with the U of A's School of Public Health, found people with a history of depression had a 30 per cent increased risk of type 2 Diabetes.

What she found was the risk of diabetes almost doubled for the patients who were using two types of therapies at the same time, tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs) and selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). Brown says people are usually prescribed multiple medications "if they have severe depression or if they are having a problem finding the right therapy."

Merck’s Singulair Tied To Suicide Reports
The FDA said it is reviewing the issue after receiving reports of mood and behavior changes, suicidal thinking and suicide in patients who took the drug, which is used to treat stuffy nose, sneezing and other allergy symptoms as well as asthma, according to the FDA web site. The agency did not say how many reports it had received.

USA Today, calling the reports "anecdotal", adds some details in their report: Singulair had sales of $4.3 billion last year and has been used by "millions," says Merck's George Philip, who directs Singulair product development. The FDA has asked Merck to look at Singulair study data for more information about reports of behavior and mood changes, suicidal thoughts and suicide in patients who took the drug.

Strong Medicine: What's Ailing the FDA?
A chilling new report commissioned by the FDA's own advisory Science Board describes an organization nearly out of control. "We were shocked at the appalling state of science at the FDA," says Garret FitzGerald, MD, chairman of the pharmacology department at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and an advisor on the report. "The analogy is Katrina. But we have to fix this before the hurricane hits."

Drug safety is perhaps the greatest concern. The respected Institute of Medicine, created in 1970 by the National Academy of Sciences, recently labeled the FDA's drug branch "dysfunctional," saying it muzzles scientific dissent, inadequately monitors drug safety and relies too heavily on drug company dollars.

Drugmakers Spend Lavishly On Docs Down Under
A report prepared for Medicines Australia by international consulting firm Deloitte shows that 42 companies spent $31 million, including $16.4 million on direct hospitality costs like meals, flights and hotels, in the second half of last year. In one case, AstraZeneca paid $514,000 to host a national symposium for 226 gastroenterologists in Melbourne - a cost of $2,275 a head.

Support For AIDS Vaccine Falters
On the eve of an NIH summit devoted to AIDS vaccine research, a once-promising study of an AIDS vaccine will be scaled back and may be scrubbed after the failure of a related Merck effort, Bloomberg News writes. The vaccine, created by the NIH, may be studied in about only 2,000 people in the US and Africa, rather than 8,500 as had been planned.

The International AIDS Vaccine Initiative, which helped bring six vaccines to human testing, will announce today it has pulled out of the trial.

Aqueous extracts from peppermint, sage and lemon balm leaves display potent anti-HIV-1 activity
Extracts from lemon balm (Melissa officinalis L.), peppermint (Mentha x piperita L.), and sage (Salvia officinalis L.) exhibited a high and concentration-dependent activity against the infection of HIV-1 in T-cell lines, primary macrophages, and in ex vivo tonsil histocultures with 50% inhibitory concentrations as low as 0.004%. The aqueous Lamiaceae extracts did not or only at very high concentrations interfere with cell viability.

Vaccine Damage: The Wakefield witch-hunt
Dr Hilary Cass, from Great Ormond Street, said: ‘It is very distressing to have a diagnosis of autism, a lifelong condition. Many families are driven to try out interventions which currently have no scientific basis. For example, advocates of the leaky gut hypothesis offer children a casein and gluten-free diet which as yet lacks an evidence base.’

This particular observation is a telling indication that this study bears little relation to reality. For there are countless families whose autistic children’s suffering from gut problems has only been eased, and their autistic symptoms improved, by the introduction of precisely such a diet. ‘No evidence base’? Tell that to those families. It is their lived experience.

The Complainant (PDF)
Martin Walker's last essay leading up to the General Medical Council hearing on 27 March 2008
"For my final essay for Cry Shame before the big demonstration on March 27th I have gone back to the beginning of the GMC fitness-to-practice hearing . For the first time, I discuss the role of the complainant, the journalist Brian Deer, the pharmaceutically funded agency Medico Legal Investigations and the New Labour Government as well as the GMC in laying the complaint against Dr Wakefield, Professor Murch and Professor Walker-Smith.

The GMC hearing could be part of a law school learning module on ‘abuse of process’, nowhere more so than in its origins. How could it be possible for a single pro vaccine journalist to have such command of the medical-legal process that he can initiate one of the biggest prosecutions in GMC history against three doctors whose research casts doubt on the safety of MMR? How could it be possible that an agency solely funded by the pharmaceutical industry could help this journalist bring the complaint before the GMC? Finally and perhaps most disconcertingly, how is it possible for the General Medical Council, an organisation granted serious legal powers under an act of parliament, to work in collusion with the government and the pharmaceutical industry dragging out a prosecution over a period of five years in order to protect the governments vaccine programme?"

FDA issues alert about HIV drug Prezista
The FDA said Prezista (darunavir), an anti-retroviral drug used to treat for the human immunodeficiency virus HIV, is suspected of contributing to several hepatic events, including liver failure, destruction of liver tissue, cirrhosis, hepatitis and jaundice.

Torture and the American Psyche: Blurring the Boundaries Between Healers and Interrogators
This is about a forum being organized in the Boston area.
"Every day the news brings further details about our country’s recent use of torture and other detainee abuse in national security, and of the debates among our leaders and citizens of practical, legal, and ethical implications of this use. We invite concerned citizens and members of the mental health professions to join together in an open discussion of the far reaching human and moral implications of our nation's use of torture."

Why Exxon Won't Produce More
. . . If you want to understand why Exxon won't produce more, it helps to listen in to ExxonMobil's presentation to analysts in New York City in early March. Halfway through the three-hour meeting, Exxon management flashed a chart that showed the company's worldwide oil production staying flat through 2012. . . .

Yet even with prices at the pump near all-time highs, Exxon isn't planning on producing any more oil four years from now than it did last year. That means the company's oil output won't even keep pace with its own projections of worldwide oil demand growth of 1.2% a year. . . .

"We don't start with a volume target and then work backwards," Instead, he said, his team examines the available investment opportunities, figures out what prices they'll likely get for that output down the road, and places their bets accordingly. "It really goes back to what is an acceptable investment return for us."

-- Exxon Chairman Rex Tillerson

I take that as a confirmation, from the horse's mouth, that "peak oil" is caused less by a physical limitation than by a desire to maximize profits as long as the oil monopoly on energy will hold: See The Peak Oil Deception

The Collapse Of American Power
Paul Craig Roberts, former Assistant Secretary of the US Treasury under Reagan, describes the sorry state of the US economy. The dollar is losing value against other currencies and its status as the world's reserve currency is in steep decline.

"When the dollar ceases to be the reserve currency, the US will no longer be able to pay its bills by borrowing more from foreigners."
